Die Boekklub 3

The third season of Die Boekklub is set in 2024.

After the death of a member of the book club, Tom (Armand Aucamp) returns to Merweville for the funeral.

He decides to stay a bit longer and during this time, he not only rediscovers the book club but himself as he gradually gets pulled into the daily lives of all the book club members.

Anna receives a surprise visitor and becomes more aware of her own mortality.

Kara and Lourens are apparently happily married, but after seven years the cracks in their marriage and own lives start showing.

Hanli and Johan are in a good space, but life changes dramatically when her dad suddenly comes to visit.

Sofia struggles to adapt after the passing of her husband and her relationship with Tom isn't what it used to be.

There are also a few of new faces in town: the woman reverend who used to be a marine biologist; Sofia's niece, Julia, who is the new doctor in town; and John – Tom's other best friend – who loses his heart in Merweville.

Together with all these characters Tom embarks on a journey of self-discovery and once again discovers joy in his life.

Through all of this, one ever-illusive light shines through the darkness: the girl in the veld, Lillie...

The third season of Die Boekklub is a moment caught in time, playing out over three months during a time when some of the characters have reached crossroads.

But despite the challenges of life, the characters discover and rediscover the power of love.

Successful photographer Lillie Human (Christia Visser) matured like Tom, but unlike him, she isn't carrying the world on her shoulders.

One thing that troubles her family, though, is that she lost her passion for taking pictures.

The years have also left their mark on guest-house owner Sofia Matthews (June van Merch), especially after the death of her husband, Tobias (Cedwyn Joel).

Anna Uys (Jana Cilliers), the town's white sangoma, made peace with her husband Jan's (Marcel van Heerden) passing, and she is still mixing herbs and reading cards.

She's waiting for her own approaching death.

Master baker Hanli Oberholzer (Nicole Holm) is almost 50 and it's an uphill battle raising a 7-year-old daughter.

The years have brought wisdom and peace and she and her husband, Johan (Anrich Herbst), are in a good space.

Merweville's lead detective, Lourens Marais (De Klerk Oelofse), is still pedalling all over town on his little bicycle, and still unhappily married to Kara (Karli Heine), who's on the brink of opening up her own coffee shop in the village.

Merweville also welcomes some new faces this season:

Piet Smit (Pierre van Pletzen) is Hanli's dad. For years Piet was a mechanic in Danville, and he has a passion for VW Beetles. He can talk about the cars the whole day and it drives Hanli up the wall.

John (Pietie Beyers), Tom's best friend, is also back in town and decides to stay. Unlike Tom, he is a ball of positive energy and he squeezes the marrow out of life.

Julia (Nicole Fortuin) is the new doctor who loves to stand on koppies and to sing for people.

Vera Klopper (Margit Meyer-Rödenbeck aka comedian Dowwe Dolla) is the new minister in town. Vera was a marine biologist before she got her calling from God.

Well read, she knows her Bible, Koran and Torah. She has a devilish sense of humour and has frank discussions with God.

In the Season 3 premiere: After the death of a book club member Tom returns to Merweville, but the reception is quite cold.

Hanli receives a surprise visitor while Kara and Lourens reap the fruits of their labour.

The close proximity of death makes life difficult for Anna and Sofia and a traveller returns from abroad.

Die Boekklub was filmed in Merweville, Stellenbosch, Strand and Somerset-West.

In the Season 2 premiere, "A New Lease on Life": Dave and Jenny fix up a dated lakehouse for a deserving family, transforming it into a modern Nantucket-style waterfront escape.

The renovation calls for several custom projects, including a refreshed boathouse, a one-of-a-kind carved inlay in the foyer and a soda-shoppe inspired teenage hideaway.

As the season continues, Dave and Jenny's breathtaking renovations spotlight custom elements that they design and curate for each project.

These include a secret bookshelf doorway to a laundry room, a reclaimed console with a hidden pop-up TV panel and a dining table made from reclaimed basketball court flooring.

Comets: Prophets of Doom

Comets - these celestial travellers have forever filled us with fear and wonder.

Lurking in the furthest reaches of our solar system, they come close to Earth as they orbit our sun - so close they may leave their signature: massive craters.

Could something as destructive as comets hold the key to life? Are the building blocks of carbon-based life forms frozen inside?

Do they contain information about the creation of our solar system?

At the conclusion of two spectacular NASA missions that sent spaceships to rendezvous with these mysterious objects, we examine the scientific and historical record of comets, including man's reaction to them.

Did a comet lead the Wise Men to Bethlehem? Did they foretell the death of kings, the destruction of civilizations?

How did Halley's Comet provide Isaac Newton with the clues for his theories of gravity?

Finally, what comprises this "dirty snowball" and how can we protect ourselves if headed on a collision-course with one?
