The Creative Arts Emmy Awards happened in "L.A dahling" at the weekend - for mostly technical/behind-the-scenes categories. Apple TV's Widow's Bay won the most with eight, including Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for Betty Gilpin and Outstanding Music Composition for a Series. The Primetime Emmys happen on 14 September - the 15th in South Africa (see below).

The American edition of whodunnit phenomenon The Traitors dominated the reality low categories at the Creative Emmys, winning four in total: Outstanding Directing, Outstanding Picture Editing, Outstanding Cinematography and Outstanding Host for Alan Cumming. The late Ebenhaezer Dibakwane's been on our minds recently. We'll never forget something he said when we met him and spoke about his background. He told us that he was hungry as a child and that you can never underestimate the impact of growing up without enough food. He was 31 when died in March 2025. RIP Ebenhaezer. >>

Heroes, Scream and Nashville star Hayden Panatierre died suddenly at the age of 36 on Sunday 16 August. Police are investigating and no cause has been disclosed. This comes three months after the release of her memoir in which she alleged she went onto a yacht with someone she trusted and was encouraged to get intimate with a 30-something famous British singer who was lying on a bed. She said she fled and hid. She was 18 at the time.

TV, film and theatre actor Lionel Newton died on Tuesday 11 August 2026. His ex-wife Lara Foot announced the news on Facebook and didn't give details on the cause. Lionel was nominated for six SAFTA awards over his career, for TV and film. These included two for Sorted on SABC3 and one for Best Supporting Actor in a Feature Film for his role in Jozi, which he won. He was 61.

Urgh, what a letdown! We only managed to suffer through one episode of the National Geographic/Disney+ docco Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston. It supposedly follows people who survived the volanic eruption. Their names are real but their lives and personalities are fabricated by Tom and the show - not factual at all. The first Roman they "follow" is Lucius Avianius, portrayed as an extremely unlikeable brat who stomps through Pompeii and disrespects his mother. Just because it happened so long ago doesn't mean you can misrepresent real people in this way.
