ABOUT
1Magic replaced former premium channel Vuzu Amp on Monday 29 January, 2018, positioning itself as a provider of "gripping local dramas, telenovelas, reality shows, movies to viewers who are also looking for the best in international reality, drama and movies."
According to the channel it "celebrates the duality of the modern African viewer, by putting Viola Davis alongside Sindi Dlathu, Olivia Pope alongside Thembisa Mdoda, and Jay Ellis next to Phat Joe, on a single channel."
At launch the channel featured a new flagship telenovela, The River; followed a few days later by the urban drama series Unmarried.
1Magic also picked up a number of series that were already airing on Vuzu Amp, including international programmes like The Fixer, How To Get Away with Murder, The Real Housewives franchise, Power, Ballers, Queen Sugar and Insecure.
Other series like the Marvel collection were integrated into M-Net and M-Net City in order to make way for more local shows on 1Magic.
Early primetime (18h00 - 21h00) shows rebroadcast in the week during the day. More mature, late prime (21h00 - 23h00) content was rebroadcast in the week, after primetime.
Popular series omnibuses played on weekends and repeats were minimised as there was more premium content than on Vuzu Amp.
Originally airing on the Premium bouquet exclusively, 1Magic was added to the Compact Plus bouquet on Thursday 18 April, 2019.
1Magic closed down permanently on 31 March, 2024.
