The Crusades

Channel: BBC Earth (DStv 184)
TX Time: 19h00
Genre: Documentary Series, History, Religion

The Crusades

Bloody and brutal, the Crusades were meant to be the religious wars to end all others.

Except they didn't, and in modern times, their history has been hijacked by politics and religious fervour, with both Muslim and Western worlds misunderstanding the truth.

This series sets out to shed new light on these legendary wars, and re-analyse the romanticised, idealised history to find out what really happened eight centuries ago, through detailed archaeology, and fresh scrutiny of ancient sites and long discarded eyewitness testimony.

In the series premiere, "Holy War": Dr Thomas Asbridge presents a revelatory account of the Crusades, the 200-year war between Christians and Muslims for control of the Holy Land.

The story of the Crusades is remembered as a tale of religious fanaticism and unspeakable violence, but now fresh research, eyewitness testimony and contemporary evidence from both the Christian and Islamic worlds shed new light on how these two great religions waged war in the name of God.

Episode 1 traces the epic journey of the first crusaders as they marched 3,000 miles from Europe to recapture the city of Jerusalem from Islam, enduring starvation, disease and bloodthirsty battle to reach their sacred goal, and then unleashed an appalling tide of barbaric violence upon their Muslim enemies.

Yet far from being the invincible holy warriors of legend, Dr Asbridge reveals that these crusaders actually considered surrender in the midst of their titanic expedition.

Mumbai Railway

Channel: Curiosity Channel (DStv 185)
TX Time: 20h00
Genre: Documentary Series, Travel

Mumbai Railway

This series explores the world's busiest railway at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai, India, revealing the science and systems behind this supersized transport operation.

In the series premiere Dan, Anita and Robert try commuting Mumbai-style, tackling "super dense crush load" on the world's busiest commuter trains.

With as many as 14 people packed into a square metre, these trains are more than twice as packed as the most crowded UK trains.

Passengers hang from the sides of trains and cross the tracks, so they're in for quite a ride.

John Sergeant heads to Darjeeling's steam powered hill railway and reminisces about a more romantic age of rail travel.

He also reveals the historical connection between tea and trains and the value this rail line had to exporters of the UK's favourite drink.

Robert heads up into mission control for the station - the control room – to explain how the Train Management System programmes safe routes for all 1500 daily trains through the station's complex mesh of tracks.

India's very first passenger train ran from this site in 1853, and Anita locates this piece of railway history.

And cameras are on board with the astonishing dabba wallahs – a crack team of delivery men who deliver 200,000 home cooked lunches to offices all over Mumbai.

With an error rate of one in 16 million, their system is rated as one of the most efficient in the world.

Unidentified: Inside America's UFO Investigation 2

Following the recently-released Pentagon UFO videos, former Blink 182 star Tom DeLonge returns to HISTORY for a new season.

In Season 2, each episode follows a specific case of the Pentagon's UFO Task Force, the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (UAP) which according to The New York Times will standardise collection and reporting on sightings of unexplained aerial vehicles, and report findings to the public every six months.

Investigators followed in the series include former military intelligence official and Special Agent In-Charge, Luis Elizondo and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence and Intelligence, Chris Mellon.

The team continue to divulge what the US government know about these bizarre craft, hear additional first-hand eyewitness accounts of UAP sightings from military and civilian personnel, and share insight and information about these craft to produce tangible evidence and build the most indisputable case for the existence and threat of UAP ever assembled.

In the Season 2 premiere, "UFOs in Combat": Everything we know about UFOS has changed.

Now, the all-star team that led the US Navy to admit UFOs are real, launches a new season of investigations aided by a fresh wave of exclusive, military eyewitnesses.

These veterans testify to an extraordinary series of encounters between US Military and UFOs dating to the Vietnam War. The team attempts to connect the dots.

Are these the same unidentified craft shown in declassified US Navy videos and have they been shadowing American forces for decades?
