Lockdown 5

Three months have passed since the death of cult leader Masabata (Nthati Moshesh) and things at Thabazimbi seem to be back on an even keel.

But poke the situation with a sharpened toothbrush and the truth will bleed out, because there are unhealed wounds beneath the surface.

Prison governor Deborah Banda's (Pamela Nomvete) head is on the chopping block when the Department of Correctional Services' new commissioner, Israel Cele (Patrick Ndlovu), cracks down on the facility following the catastrophic death toll in Season 4.

Behind Israel's back though, Deborah and Deputy Commissioner Siyanda (Molefi Monaisa) are plotting to get rid of Israel – with a little help from the inmates and a mental asylum riot.

Deborah doesn't appreciate being told off like a schoolgirl or threatened in her own office, and this queen of manipulation has plenty of minds inside and outside the prison to twist to her will.

But a shock pregnancy will have her facing some tough personal decisions and place her at the mercy of her prison nemesis, inmate Maki (Linda Sebezo).

Ruthless but compassionate MaZet (Dawn Thandeka King) is a study in contradictions. She might seem like she is playing into Tyson's (Lorcia Cooper) hands this season, but don't let the apparent vulnerability deceive you.

MaZet is always five steps ahead. She has just one blind spot though: her friendships.

MaZet's downfall this season is trusting a previously loyal ally – a person she herself has betrayed in the past. And it's a twist that will place MaZet's daughter, Nkuli (Busisiwe Mtshali), in death's shadow.

Tyson wants MaZet knocked off her perch, leaving all the power in the prison to Tyson. And to do that, she is planning to hurt MaZet through what she loves most – her family, namely her daughter.

It's a confusing relationship that will get even screwier later in the season as the two make up after a full-on murder attempt and promise to be allies again.

Tyson and MaZet will both wind up having their heads examined at Kgotsong Asylum this season.

Ex-singing star Monde (Zola Nombona) starts the season in a miserable position. Fellow inmate Vicky Viks (Lauren Jenae) is targeting her in a humiliating prank war over a series of betrayals, aside from the fact that Monde accidentally scarred up Vicky's pretty face with boiling porridge during a fight.

And Monde's envious sister, Katlego (Natasha Thahane), is headed for Kgotsong Asylum after her collision with Season 4 inmate Masabata's mystic death cult, which has left her imitating Masabata's eerie head tilt.

If she ever learns that Monde was the one who sent her to the asylum, we'll find out just how like her creepy mentor Monde can be.

At the asylum, Katlego will fall under the care of head nurse Palesa – played by series newcomer Sophie Ndaba – who is harbouring an old grudge against Deborah thanks to Deborah's affair with Palesa's abusive ex-husband, Deputy Commissioner Siyanda.

The rift between Deborah and Maki is deep and twisted. Deborah used a version of Pavlovian conditioning last season to get vicious prison assassin Maki practically eating out of her hand and barking like a dog in Deborah's secret torture cage.

Now Maki is heavily dependent on drugs and she has lost respect among the inmates that she used to terrify with a clack of her teeth.

The tables will turn this season when Maki gets Deborah in her power and new torture session begins.

Deborah might have a blackmail tape in her hands, but Maki could get the last laugh when she finds a way to make Deborah pay for the biggest crime that Maki holds against her - the loss of Maki's son.

It's an eye for an eye this season.

MasterChef: The Professionals 12

MasterChef presenter Gregg Wallace, chef Monica Galetti and Michelin-starred Marcus Wareing search for the UK's most exciting cooking talent of 2019.

Over seven weeks, 48 professional chefs face the rigours of the MasterChef kitchen before one is crowned this year's culinary superstar.

In the opening heat, six professional chefs from all over the country arrive at the MasterChef kitchen and put their reputations on the line to stake their claim to the coveted title.

The chefs face two daunting challenges - at the end of which, three chefs are sent home and the strongest three go through to this week's quarter-final.

Each chef begins with the dreaded skills test. Under the watchful eye of all three judges, the initial moments for any competitor are nerve racking as their knowledge, palate and experience are weighed up in this infamous first assessment.

This first skills test this year has been set by Marcus. The chefs have to cook up a poached guinea fowl breast with a sauce robert, with only 20 minutes to display deft butchery skills and show their sauce-making prowess.

Marcus's dish is a culinary classic - will the contestants crash and burn or cook up a storm?

The remaining three chefs face Monica's test. They must hold their nerve when she challenges them to prepare hand-cut tagliatelle with a lamb ragu.

Packing in technique and taste to create the perfect pasta dish is no mean feat for the contenders.

Finally all six professionals have a chance to showcase their style when they cook their own signature dish for Monica, Marcus and Gregg.

In an hour and 15 minutes, they must inspire the judges with their creativity, technical ability and flavours.

It is their chance to secure a place in the competition, as the judges decide which three are sent home and which three go through to this week's quarter-final.

World's Most Evil Killers 4

Channel: CBS Reality (DStv 132)
TX Time: 21h00
Genre: True Crime, Documentary Series

World's Most Evil Killers 4

Delves into the gripping real-life stories of the world's most terrifying and prolific killers.

Each episode focuses on one notorious killer and features authentic first-hand accounts of their behaviour, from detectives who ran the cases, journalists who reported on the stories, relatives and at times survivors, alongside series experts who provide analysis.

In the Season 4 premiere, "John Sweeney": The first episode focuses on John Sweeney, aka the Scalp Hunter.

Sweeney's first victim was 33-year-old American model Melissa Halstead, who was eventually identified 18 years after her body was found in the Westersingel Canal in Rotterdam.

His second victim was 31-year-old Paula Fields, who too was dismembered and found in the Regent's Canal, London in 2001.

He was eventually arrested after the two murders were connected and in April, 2011, the 54-year-old killer was found guilty on two counts of murder and was given a whole life sentence.

Interviewers speak to Sweeny's former girlfriend Delia Balmer, who tells them first-hand what it was like to live with the controlling and violent double murderer.

They also interview detective inspector Steve Smith, who worked on the case with the Metropolitan Police Homicide and serious crime command.

Buried in the Backyard

Channel: eReality (Openview 108)
TX Time: 21h30
Genre: True Crime, Documentary Series, Docu-Drama

Buried in the Backyard

Examines true-crime stories of victims found buried in the most unsuspecting of places.

While most people enjoy their backyard as a safe haven, others are not so lucky when they discover the horrors lurking beneath well-trimmed hedges and manicured fences.

Uncovering the remains is only the beginning, however, as each hour-long episode follows a unique police investigation to identify the body, determine a cause of death and find the person responsible.

Recreations, along with first-hand accounts from those closest to the victims and law enforcement agents involved in the case, bring each shocking tale to life.

As investigators dig into the "how" and "why" surrounding each crime, viewers are taken on an unpredictable journey and reminded that this could happen to anyone - in any home, in any neighbourhood.

In the series premiere, "The House on Canyon Road": The gruesome discovery of a skeletonised and dismembered corpse buried in the backyard of a Seattle home results in an investigation that unravels a 30-year-old plot hatched by a vindictive family.

From Dominee Droel landing in jail to Vis Venter's ideas on how to make money to Blaartjie ending up naked with just a guitar in her hand and flowers in her hair at the dining-hall that leads to much mampoer, the residents of Huis Lelieveld will prove that they might be old - but they're definitely still young of spirit.

Lockdown 5's starting earlier on Mzansi Magic than it would have - would probably only have aired next year some time, if that.

But it's airing now because Housekeepers 2 was supposed to start but isn't because of ... um... Lockdown.

The production of the season isn't complete so they're airing Lockdown instead.

It's the same set-up with Trackers on Mzansi Magic that started last night - Season 2 of eHostela was lined-up to start but didn't for the same reason.
