Based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, the 10-episode series follows Atticus Freeman as he journeys with his childhood friend Letitia and his uncle George on a road trip from Chicago across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father Montrose.
Their search-and-rescue turns into a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and monstrous creatures that could be ripped from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback.
Atticus is a Korean war vet who always has a pulp novel in his back pocket, and wears his heart on his sleeve despite the daily injustice of living in Jim Crow America.
His father, Montrose, however is hard headed and secretive, and always believed you can't live in a fantasy world — making him less-than-thrilled about his son's love for pulp novels.
It's Atticus' uncle who's always been more like a father to him. Warm, funny, and well read, he was the first to introduce Atticus to the wonderful and strange world of pulp novels.
As the publisher of the "Safe Negro Travel Guide" he's been on enough adventures to understand there's no place like home.
Letitia "Leti" Lewis hustled her way across the country as an artist protesting for civil rights and now finds herself back home to plant some roots.
Her half-sister Ruby is also a hustler, but her hustles haven't paid off. Her family ties are tested when she's presented with an offer she can't refuse.
Hippolyta Freeman is a star-gazer who's been a housewife most of her life, but has dreams of getting into some adventures of her own.
Her itch for adventure will eventually, literally and figuratively, take her to the stars and beyond.
Eustice Hunt is a sundown county sheriff with a NAACP complaint file a mile long, and a marine tattoo on the back of his neck so the enemy has something to aim at, gets more than he bargained for when he crosses paths with Atticus.
Ji-Ah is a seemingly naive nursing student who is thrust into active service when war breaks out, and a rash of soldier disappearances suggests she is more than what she seems.
Christina Braithwhite is the only daughter of the leader of a secret order calling themselves the "Sons of Adam." She's gone to great lengths to earn her father's respect, but to no avail.
She's going to pave her own path to power, and use Atticus and his family to do it.
Willam is Christina's henchman, lover, bodyguard, spy, or whatever else she may need him to be. Blonde-haired, blue-eyed, he's the "perfect specimen" for the Aryan race.
In the series premiere, "Sundown": Veteran and pulp-fiction aficionado Atticus Freeman travels from the Jim Crow South to his South Side of Chicago hometown in search of his missing father Montrose.
After recruiting his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) and childhood friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) to join him, the trio sets out for "Ardham", Maryland, where they think Montrose may have gone looking for insight into Atticus' late mother's ancestry.
As they journey across the Midwest, Tic, Leti and George encounter dangers lurking at every turn, especially after sundown.

Suspicious Minds creates a visceral viewing experience where a murder mystery unfolds as a psychological thriller where suspicion and doubt cloud the perceptions of everyone involved.
In the series premiere, "Chi Town Gossip": The brutal murder of a successful hair salon owner and mother upends a tight-knit Chicago community.

Surgeons: At the Edge of Life 3
BBC Earth (DStv 184)
Surgeons: At the Edge of Life returns to reveal the pioneering work of some of the UK's top surgeons.
In the UK, three million major operations are carried out every year, and some of the most difficult ones are performed at world-renowned Royal Papworth and Addenbrooke's hospitals in Cambridge.
Situated just metres apart on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the largest centre of medical research in Europe, this series goes behind the hospitals' theatre doors to show how they push the boundaries of what is medically possible, and to meet the patients whose lives can be transformed by their groundbreaking work.
Some of the extraordinary procedures in this season includes one that involves stopping the patient's heart and draining every last drop of blood from her body; an operation to remove a tumour on a spinal cord which could cause paralysis with one wrong move; and one of the most complex transplant procedures in the world.
In the first episode, David Jenkins, a world-leading surgeon at Royal Papworth, performs one of surgery's most technically demanding – and extraordinary - operations.
Called a pulmonary endarterectomy (PTE), no other hospital in the UK offers this procedure and it will take David's patient, 54-year-old grandmother Shelly, to the very edge of life.
Shelly has a rare form of hypertension where her body is unable to dissolve blood clots which have travelled to her lungs and are now blocking her pulmonary arteries.
More and more clots are building up and without the operation she will die.
The only way to remove them is to cool her body to just 20 degrees, stop her heart and drain all the blood from her body.
She will be technically dead on the theatre table. David admits that it does seem 'counterintuitive' to make Shelly temporarily dead.
Is she between life and death? It is that in-between place.
David has just 20 minutes while Shelly is entirely empty of blood to remove the clots, so he needs to be fast.
The cold will protect her during this time because the low temperature slows her cell function, but any longer and lack of oxygen will damage her brain.
Shelly will then need to be refilled with blood before David repeats the whole process again on her other lung.
Meanwhile, loving husband Phil sits at home with an agonising wait, trying not to think about worst-case scenarios.
