Season 1

As the World Turns is an American television soap opera created by Irna Phillips as a sister show to her other soap opera Guiding Light and set in the closely-knit community of Oakdale, Illinois which revolves around the complex lives of the Hughes, Montgomery, Ryan, Snyder, Stewart and Walsh families.

The series aired in the USA on CBS from 2 April, 1956 to 17 September, 2010. Running for 54 years with 13,858 episodes, As the World Turns holds the second-longest continuous run of any daytime network soap opera in American history, surpassed only by Guiding Light.

As the World Turns premiered in South Africa on SABC2 on Tuesday 1 June 2010 at 14h20, beginning with Episode 12,653, which was broadcast in the USA on 9 December 2005. New episodes broadcast Mondays to Fridays at the same time.

Synopsis

Set in the closey-knit fictional community of Oakdale, Illinois, the series centres round the loves and lives of the Hughes, Montgomery, Ryan, Snyder, Stewart and Walsh families, which has now moved through generations.

The families are mostly involved with legal and medical businesses.

Originally the central family was the Hughes, however in latter years the stories mostly revolved around the Snyder family.

As the World Turns won 43 Daytime Emmy Awards during its run. They were as follows:
