Boet van der Hoven was one of a kind – an outstanding student, a beloved teacher, and later, a potter, writer and artist known for his colourful paintings.
His road began and ended in the Klein Karoo and in between lay a full and complex life.
In the documentary Boet se Goet (Boet's Stuff) we are taken on a journey through Boet's harsh outer and inner worlds.
The film offers insight into the struggles of an intense artistic spirit with life and environment, his escape into pottery, his words in poetry and letters, and his paintings of Karoo landscapes and its people.
The documentary was directed by filmmaker Koos Roets, with poet and radio personality Daniel Hugo as narrator and presenter.
Boet's loved ones share their memories of him, while David Kramer recalls the role Boet played in the story behind his iconic red leather shoes.
Anton Goosen also features with the song Saterdagaand, for which he co-wrote the lyrics with Boet.
Experts and friends speak of his influences – from well-known artists such as Pranas Domsaitis to his contact, inspiration and friendship with painter Gregoire Boonzaier and the potter Hyme Rabinowitz.
Through Roets's lens, the documentary also offers an intimate glimpse into a marginalised community, caught in the cyclical rhythm of hardship, labour, fleeting joys, pain and loss, life and death.
