TV BIZ Netflix increases the price of its Standard and Premium subscriptions in South Africa. The Standard plan increases by R20, from R139 to R159 per month and the Premium by R30, from R169 to R199 per month. According to the streamer, these prices will roll out to existing viewers over the coming weeks and will apply immediately to new subscribers, starting on 19 October.

TV BIZ DStv follows eVOD's model of streaming soapie episodes before they air on TV, except DStv's doing one episode in advance instead of five. They've launched Early Access for Legacy, Suidooster and The River (1Magic). Viewers can watch episodes a day before they're on TV, via Catch Up or an online Explora. Also: Love Island UK episodes are available a week before they're on TV and full seasons of select series are loading when Episode 1 airs on TV e.g. Hacks, which started on M-Net on 27 August.

TV BIZ ICASA rules that Multichoice and other pay-TV operators may only carry SABC channels “subject to commercially negotiable terms” i.e. MultiChoice needs to pay to carry the SABC channels, which they haven't done for 13 years, yet they pay for the other channels on DStv.

TV BIZ Quizzical Pictures (Swartwater, Intersexions) partners with Australian production house Goalpost Pictures (The Invisible Man) for new M-Net crime series Detective Cooper. It's based on the book A Beautiful Place to Die by Australian-South African writer Malla Nunn and it's about a white detective in apartheid-era South Africa who has a dangerous secret: he's mixed race.

TV BIZ eMedia and SABC extend their carriage deal which currently sees SABC1, 2 and 3 on OpenView. SABC's Sports Channel will be added soon, along with 19 SABC radio stations and two other SABC channels. We presume one of these will be an Encore-type set-up. Move coincides with the switch-off of analogue across the country while many households still don't have access to DTT (digital TV) set top boxes

TV BIZ Netflix picks up Happiness Ever After, the sequel to the 2016 movie Happiness is a Four-letter Word. Thabang Moleya returns as director and Khanyi Mbau and Renate Stuurman reprise their roles as Zaza and Princess. No confirm on whether or not Mmabatho Montsho will return as Nandi. Story takes place five years later and Ayanda Halimana (Makoti, iKani) replaces Busisiwe Ntintili (Greed & Desire, Thula's Vine) as screenwriter. Loads on Netflix later this year.

TV BIZ Showtime orders drama series Shaka: King of the Zulu Nation, while we await the much-hyped but non-materialising Shaka Ilembe from M-Net. Showtime's rendition will be directed and produced by Training Day director Antoine Fuqua. Created and written by Nigerian-born writing team Olu Odebunmi and Tolu Awosika, writers on the upcoming Chris Pratt TV series The Terminal List for Amazon Prime, also directed by Antoine.

TV BIZ BBC Studios and ITV joint streaming service BritBox to launch in South Africa in the second half of 2021. Now we know why Emmerdale and Coronation Street have been ripped from M-Net City. Both are on BritBox in the US and Canada within hours of their UK broadcast so very likely it will happen here too.

TV BIZ DStv launches new concept store in Polowane called a Customer Experience Centre. Combines services at walk-in centres with a shopping experience in two floors. Subscribers can purchase decoders, test devices, activate services, pay for subscriptions and access self-service functionalities. Features themed spaces with a sales booth, solution bar, content lounge and what they're calling "entertainment pods".
