TV BIZ Quizzical Pictures (Swartwater, Intersexions) partners with Australian production house Goalpost Pictures (The Invisible Man) for new M-Net crime series Detective Cooper. It's based on the book A Beautiful Place to Die by Australian-South African writer Malla Nunn and it's about a white detective in apartheid-era South Africa who has a dangerous secret: he's mixed race.

TV BIZ eMedia and SABC extend their carriage deal which currently sees SABC1, 2 and 3 on OpenView. SABC's Sports Channel will be added soon, along with 19 SABC radio stations and two other SABC channels. We presume one of these will be an Encore-type set-up. Move coincides with the switch-off of analogue across the country while many households still don't have access to DTT (digital TV) set top boxes

TV BIZ Netflix picks up Happiness Ever After, the sequel to the 2016 movie Happiness is a Four-letter Word. Thabang Moleya returns as director and Khanyi Mbau and Renate Stuurman reprise their roles as Zaza and Princess. No confirm on whether or not Mmabatho Montsho will return as Nandi. Story takes place five years later and Ayanda Halimana (Makoti, iKani) replaces Busisiwe Ntintili (Greed & Desire, Thula's Vine) as screenwriter. Loads on Netflix later this year.

TV BIZ Showtime orders drama series Shaka: King of the Zulu Nation, while we await the much-hyped but non-materialising Shaka Ilembe from M-Net. Showtime's rendition will be directed and produced by Training Day director Antoine Fuqua. Created and written by Nigerian-born writing team Olu Odebunmi and Tolu Awosika, writers on the upcoming Chris Pratt TV series The Terminal List for Amazon Prime, also directed by Antoine.

TV BIZ Principal photography underway for Star Trek spin-off Strange New Worlds by streamer Paramount+, previously known as CBS All Access. It's a prequel to the original series that follows Captain Christopher Pike, Mr. Spock and Number One on the USS Enterprise before Captain Kirk took command. Stars the same headliners as Stark Trek: Discovery: Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn.

TV BIZ BBC Studios and ITV joint streaming service BritBox to launch in South Africa in the second half of 2021. Now we know why Emmerdale and Coronation Street have been ripped from M-Net City. Both are on BritBox in the US and Canada within hours of their UK broadcast so very likely it will happen here too.

She left her agency Moonyeen Lee & Associates (MLA) to her daughter Cindy Lee and Cindy's wife Nina Morris Lee. TV BIZ DStv launches new concept store in Polowane called a Customer Experience Centre. Combines services at walk-in centres with a shopping experience in two floors. Subscribers can purchase decoders, test devices, activate services, pay for subscriptions and access self-service functionalities. Features themed spaces with a sales booth, solution bar, content lounge and what they're calling "entertainment pods".

TV BIZ SABC partners with Telkom for its new streaming service TelkomONE which offers four SABC channels for free: SABC1, 2, Sport and Education. No sign of SABC3 anywhere. Sport and Education are the channels created for DTT. Now live on www.telkomone.tv. They'll have to run it much, MUCH better than they run their telecoms if they hope to last.

TV BIZ DStv announces launch of new wifi-connected Explora called Ultra Explora and a stand alone internet set-top box Streama, for streaming without an Explora. MultiChoice mentioned Netflix and Amazon as being available on these in a financial report in June but they're nowhere to be seen. The Ultra Explora and Streama have Showmax, YouTube and JOOX.
