Jules is too miserable in Silo 3 and it's bringing us down. Yes, losing her memory's been difficult for her and now the Silo situation's dire HOWEVER she's supposed to be a shero and they should exude a deep sense of positivity. She hasn't smiled or shown warmth or enthusiasm once by Episode 7.

Yet another local remake series on the way to Netflix. Yawn. Title: Umthetho, based on Brazilian show Brotherhood. Stars Nunu Khumalo, Tony Kgoroge and Given Stuurman. Follows public prosecutor Mbali who's pulled into a brutal prison syndicate led by the brother she thought she lost. Premieres 14 August 2026.

Fifth and final season of The Bear premieres on Disney+ on 26 June 2026 and we don't care. We're still boycotting it with steadfast commitment after it went from hero to zero in Season 3 when it turned into humourless angst. >>

Tropika Island of Treasure launches spin-off titled Tropika Island Search on S3 on 16 March at 18h00. We thought it would cover the audition search for contestants who'll join the schlebs in Season 12 but unfortunately not. Host Zanele Potelwa and these previous schleb contestants go to seven islands to "search" for the season's location: Hungani Ndlovu, Shashi Naidoo, Bobby Van Jaarsveld, Nay Maps, Jonathan Boynton-Lee, Nqobile Khwezi and Chad Jones.

We expected BBMzansi's Ilano to be our confidante in the Diary Room, revealing truths and insights about the housemates from her observations but she isn't. Her eyes were downcast while speaking throughout her first session - she didn't speak to us directly - and she was more concerned about getting protein shakes than engaging with us!

None of the South African TV series nominated for a 2025 International Emmy have won. The ceremony was held in the early hours of Tuesday 25 November and nominees were: doccos Chasing the Sun and School Ties, drama series Koek and true crime drama Catch Me a Killer.

HBO renews annoying historical drama The Gilded Age for Season 4, a month after the Season 3 premiere in the US. Seasons 1 and 2 aired on M-Net and are currently on Showmax. No sign of Season 3 on either.

Former comedy The Bear returns to Disney+ for Season 4 on 26 June and we definitely won't be watching. It went from a Hero Show when Season 3 started to Zero by the end when it became a self-indulgent tragedy with no humour. We couldn't even finish watching after Episode 8 where Natalie and her mother made an obvious play for an Emmy in the endless hospital scene that tried (and failed) to be the The Fly eps from Breaking Bad.

What a letdown! The Last of Us has gone from a sci-fi to a schmaltzy, contrived romance in Season 2. Ellie's mediocre guitar playing and singing to serenade Dina just went on and ON in a yawn fest of over sentimentality. Joel's corpse isn't even dust yet and it's a completely different show from what it was. And what happened to Abby who killed him?! She was supposed to be the big deal of the season but she's disappeared, replaced by that new crowd who torture people naked.

Too many shows name their first episode "Pilot". It's happening again with 61st Street on Universal TV (see TVSA's New On TV Today). It's obviously the pilot episode they produced to pitch the show before it was picked up for a full season but you'd think they'd give it an enticing title once it's a done deal. Lazy!

No wins for Die Brug or Takalani Sesame at the 2024 International Emmys. Not surprising considering the fact that award-winning Shaka iLembe didn't get a nomination even though it was entered. No clarity from these awards as to what they're looking for. Only two southern hemisphere shows won in a total of 14 categories, from Mexico and Argentina. Kid's film Tabby McTat, directed by Cape Town animation directors Jac Hamman and Sarah Scrimgeour, won the animation category, however it was a UK entry and not South African.

Disappointment of the century Ellen DeGeneres does a stand-up routine in new Netflix comedy special For Your Approval. Claims this is the final special of her career. Reveals what she's been doing since she got "kicked out of show business." Would be much better if she riffed about WHY instead. Premieres 24 September. >>

Kalawa Jazmee documentary series to air on Mzansi Magic from 13 August at 17h00. Tells the story of the record label's 30-year history. No mention of its role in Idols though, nor why their signed winners have gone so silent. Zama (Season 16), Berry (17) and Thapelo (18) - where are their new releases?! Kalawa's been no better at representing Idols winners than Gallo was.

MultiChoice makes a big fuss about Showmax Pro becoming a glorified catch-up service for WWE on SuperSport. They're calling Showmax "the new home of WWE Network in Africa" as if it won't be on SuperSport anymore, but it will be because they've signed a multi-year extension deal for SuperSport. It'll also be on Showmax Pro, along with a library of archived programming. >>
