News Shorts - Review

REVIEW The best show on BBC Earth right now (after Ben Fogle's long-running series): comedian Bill Bailey's Australian Adventure. Gives a unique, funny perspective on Western Australia, its history and the present, with a focus on quirky people. Excellently researched too. Lots of intriguing stuff we didn't know. Airs Fridays at 20h00, with repeats in between.

REVIEW The premiere of Netflix sci-fi Black Mirror 7 - titled Common People - gets our vote as the Best Episode of the Series, alongside Nosedive from Season 3 - the eps where everyone rated each other on an app in a society ruled by judgement and discrimination. Common People elicits the same feeling: terror at what our world's going to be if things keep going the way they are. "You have to upgrade to Rivermind Plus if you want to stay alive."

REVIEW A plea to BBC Lifestyle or our locals channels: PLEASE produce The Great South African Sewing Bee. A local version would be brilliant, we just know it. There are so many diverse sewers in South Africa, from all walks of life. Just go into our fabric shops and you'll see. We feel this during every season of The Great British Sewing Bee and felt militant about it while watching Monday's Season 9 premiere on BBC Lifestyle.

REVIEW Our fave channel of the five channels being added to Compact from 1 April: Curiosity. Crammed with knowledge and stuff you didn't know. We used to cover it in TVSA's New on TV Today but can't anymore unfortunately - DStv and the channel have stopped providing info on the new shows starting on it.

REVIEW Apple TV+ series The New Look delivers a unique, deeply moving account of World War II by telling the story of French fashion designers in occupied France. Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, Cristóbal Balenciaga. Reveals heart-wrenching, shocking and complicated details we didn't know. Sales of Miss Dior perfume must be on the rise!

REVIEW Speaking of Claire Danes... (see News Short below) - let's hope her new show is better than Full Circle. Aired on M-Net last year and what a joke - couldn't make it past 35-minutes, despite the cast that includes Timothy Olyphant and Dennis Quaid. Bad script, contrived plot, unconvincing acting.

REVIEW Murder mystery Poker Face redefines the concept of a procedural by using style, structure, language and theatricality in an excellent Season 1. The good news: there's going to be a Season 2. Premiere date still loading.

REVIEW Latest Pam Golding TV ad is full of big stuff marketing speak that makes no sense. Features an estate agent with a voiceover saying: "At Pam Golding we understand that the most valuable properties are those that can't be bought or sold." WTF? The entire real estate business is based on buying and selling properties! Maybe they're giving them away for free. >>
