Widely regarded as the first woman of African American descent to have a pilot's license, Bessie Coleman soared across the sky.

Her goal was to encourage women and African Americans to reach their dreams.

Born to a family of poor sharecroppers in Texas, Bessie Coleman saved and received sponsorships to attend flight school in France.

Unfortunately, her career ended with a tragic plane crash in 1923, in which she was flung from the plane, plummeting to the ground.

Her legacy lives on in this special.
