Rain Dogs

A dark comedy from the new voice of Cash Carraway, Rain Dogs chronicles the life of Costello Jones, a devoted mother who wants more for her precocious young daughter, Iris.

As she hustles to survive, Costello leans on Selby, Iris' pseudo father (and Costello's pseudo soulmate), and Gloria, the duo's loyal yet chaotic godmother/best friend.

Together they form a makeshift swaggerous family bound by a complex but deep-rooted love and defiance towards a system built against them.

A tale of a mother's love for her daughter, Rain Dogs explores a dysfunctional family on the fringes of society, attempting to go straight in a crooked world.

In the series premiere, "It's Hard to be a Saint in a City": Facing eviction from their flat, Costello makes a promise to her daughter Iris that they will have a safe place to stay by nightfall.

Selby is back in the free world after a stint in prison and keen to reconnect with Iris and Costello.

Selby and Costello don't know if they can trust one another again, but as Costello and Iris's search for a place to stay grows more desperate, both Costello and Selby will stop at nothing to keep Iris safe in the crooked city.

Burma with Simon Reeve

Channel: BBC Earth (DStv 184)
TX Time: 20h00
Genre: Travel, Documentary Series

Burma with Simon Reeve

British adventurer Simon Reeve travels to beautiful and troubled Burma, also called Myanmar, for a new two-part series.

Cut off for decades under military rule, Burma now has a democratically-elected government led by worldfamous Nobel laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi.

But in August 2017, the world was left stunned when a brutal military operation drove hundreds of thousands of ethnic Rohingya Muslims from their homes.

On his journey Simon discovers a divided country – where life is steadily improving for many, while others still live in terror of the military who still have enormous power in the country.

In the first episode, Simon travels to Burma to find out the roots of this crisis - as well as heading to Bangladesh to witness the drama that is still unfolding.

He begins his journey in the biggest city in the country, Yangon, and drives north into Burma's Buddhist heartlands and the stunning ancient capital of Bagan - a sight that rivals the great wonders of the world.

He meets the monks who supported the people through the darkest days of dictatorship.

And he is granted an audience with some of the most contentious figures in the country – ultra-nationalist monks preaching hate against the country's Muslim Rohingya.

Stopped from visiting the scene of the military crackdown against the Rohingya, Simon travels to Bangladesh to meet the refugees traumatised by the violence.

In what is now the biggest refugee settlement in the world, he learns about a crisis that has been brewing for decades, with no sign of ending, and potentially grave consequences for the wider region.

In the second episode, Simon travels deeper into beautiful and troubled Burma.

Simon journeys up the vast Irrawaddy River to the old royal capital of Mandalay, home to an exotic market for precious jade.

In Burma's mountainous highlands, he experiences the country's vibrant ethnic heritage at an extraordinary and explosive fire-balloon festival, then visits an elephant sanctuary and finds out how a growing tourism industry is helping them survive after working for decades in the logging industry.

Burma is a melting pot of different ethnic groups, and having seen first-hand the suffering of the Rohingya people on the first leg of his journey, Simon now travels secretly into one of Burma's many other conflict zones to meet a huge rebel army who have been fighting the Burmese military for decades.

Simon goes on combat patrol into the jungle with the rebels and learns why they have been fighting the longest-running civil war in the world.

The Neighborhood 5

The Neighborhood stars Cedric the Entertainer in a comedy about what happens when the friendliest guy in the Midwest moves his family to a neighbourhood in Los Angeles where not everyone looks like him or appreciates his extreme neighbourliness.

Dave Johnson is a good-natured, professional conflict negotiator.

When his wife, Gemma, gets a job as a school principal in L.A., they move from Michigan with their young son, Grover, unfazed that their new dream home is located in a community quite different from their small town.

Their opinionated next-door neighbour, Calvin Butler, is wary of the newcomers, certain that the Johnsons will disrupt the culture on the block.

However, Calvin's gracious wife, Tina, rolls out the welcome wagon; their chipper younger son, Marty, thinks the Johnsons could be good for the community; and their older son, Malcolm, finds Dave may finally be someone who understands him.

Dave realises that fitting into their new community is more complex than he expected, but if he can find a way to connect with Calvin, they have an excellent chance of making their new neighborhood their home.

In the Season 5 premiere, "Welcome Back to the Neighborhood": When Dave decides to disconnect the Johnson home from the grid, he inadvertently causes a community-wide power outage, much to Calvin's frustration.

Also, in the wake of Marty's engagement, Tina struggles with no longer being the primary woman in her son's life.
