The series is set in the fictional Healing Hands Hospital, where nurses and doctors dedicate their lives to helping others.

Here we meet Busisiwe, a new intern who is understandably nervous – but for reasons that have more to do with the past she is running away from, keeping secrets from everyone around her.

Busisiwe isn't the only one fighting her demons while fighting to save lives – her colleagues all have their own unhealed wounds that affect their everyday and working selves.

Their hands might be healing, but they can also bring harm to each other and themselves.

Will the nurses and doctors at Healing Hands manage to help those around them without letting their sometimes-shaky judgement destroy everything they've worked for?

The series stars Samke Makhoba as Busisiwe, Talitha Ndima as Neo, Tumie Ngumla as Refilwe, Eve Rasimeni as Sindi, Ayanda Ngubane as Agnes, Katlego Lebogang as Mabalwa, Buyile Mdladla as Walter, Chumisa Cosa as Nurse Lydia and Chumani Pan as Sonwabo Dube.

7 Deadly Sins

Channel: BET (DStv 129)
TX Time: 21h30
Genre: Short Film, Anthology

7 Deadly Sins

This series of short films was produced by seven local production companies in KZN who were given a brief to develop stories in line with the theme.

This is a unique interpretation of the 7 Deadly Sins, told through the lens of authentic young African filmmakers.

The series kicks off with a double bill episode titled A Better Way of Dying and Indonda.

Indoda unpacks the sin of pride, in which Buhle (played by James Khumalo) has lost touch with his Zulu identity and is struggling to come to terms with the loss of his father at a young age.

A Better Way to Die tackles the sin of sloth. We meet Cathy (Andile Mpisi), who suffers from clinical depression.

She ascends to the top of a high rise building to commit suicide by jumping to her death, but is interrupted by another would-be-jumper, Pete (Wandile Nodilwa).

After an intense dialogue, the duo reach a surprising decision.

Other short films include Double Life, starring Tony Kgoroge in the lead role of Pastor Gumede; and Fanele Ntuli as the pastor's forbidden fruit.

This film delves into the ever-alluring topic of lust.

Gumede, a charismatic man of the cloth, is a sex addict but is given a second chance to redeem himself and uplift a church in crisis.

In the upcoming weeks, Cash-in-Transit will take you on a journey of hidden treasure in KZN's scenic Newcastle where a doctor, a prison warden, a petty thief and a grumpy old man (Patrick Ndlovu) compete to get their hands on the money.

This film will unpack the sin of greed.

We further delve into envy through a film entitled Sweet Wild Thing, in which we meet the resilient Amanda, who grew up on the streets of Durban.

In the complex relationship of the protection of a gang in exchange for her safety, she has to prove her loyalty continuously.

In the film Before 8am we are introduced to Trevor Adams (Zahir Bassa), who is dealing with the loss of his wife due to COVID-19.

Through his lack of understanding and overwhelming grief which turns into intense rage, he blames a higher power and himself for her death.

The theme of gluttony is dealt with in a film titled Red Tape, in which Radebe (Jet Novuka) is a "righteous" man and single father whose pride knows no bounds, as he lives for his son.

With his excessive pride, his only saving grace will be his passion for justice.

Interesting to see the 7 Deadly Sins series dealing with suicide... a real, relevant theme for our current times.

A couple of weeks ago I was walking round my neighbourhood and happened to chat to a guy who owns a local tow truck company.

He told me that they'd been called to the scene of a suicide earlier in the day - they had to tow away the car because someone had parked their car near the park and committed suicide by putting a bag over his head.

He also said that it wasn't an isolated incident. He's on the emergency radio frequency and he said suicides had risen notably recently.

It's really haunted me - I think about it often, especially when I see everyone in their masks, and how alienated we've become from each other. Someone has to be in so much pain to do it... very difficult to get ones head around it.
