For 5,000 years Egypt has been shaped by one thing more than any other: the River Nile.

For historian Bettany Hughes, this is the journey of a lifetime, as she sets off on a 900-mile adventure up the Nile, from its mouth to Egypt's southern border.

Travelling on her own traditional Dahabiya boat, Bettany journeys almost 1,000 miles from Cairo to the Aswan Dam on the mighty Nile, stopping off at the most iconic and dazzling sites along the way.

Bettany takes in the famous pyramids, great temples and new discoveries - which show that without the Nile, there would have been no Ancient Egypt.
