World on Fire

Drama telling the story of World War Two through the lives of ordinary people from all sides of this global conflict.

Summer 1939. Translator Harry is working at the British Embassy in Warsaw, falling in love with Polish waitress Kasia.

When German tanks roll into Poland and Britain declares war on Germany, Harry and Kasia are faced with terrible choices.
With her life in grave danger, the only way for Kasia to be safe is to escape.

Can Harry help her - and if he does, how will he ever explain himself to factory worker and singer Lois Bennett, the girl he left behind in Manchester?

As the Nazi threat spreads across Europe, Kasia must choose between love and fighting for her country, Harry must find his place in the world, and Lois seizes new opportunities the war throws up.

The conflict overturns everything for Harry's snobbish mother Robina and for Douglas, Lois' pacifist father, and her firecracker younger brother Tom, who joins the navy and finds himself under fire in one of the first major battles of the war.

In Berlin, outspoken American journalist Nancy risks her life trying to help her neighbours the Rosslers from the attentions of the ruling Nazi regime, while in Paris, Nancy's nephew - medic Webster - refuses to leave the city and the man he loves.

This is a series that takes us across the first year of the war, from ordinary life in Manchester to the beaches of Dunkirk, getting right under the skin and into the hearts and minds of those living their lives during this extraordinary time as they grapple with the unthinkable: a world in flames.

Channel: BBC Earth (DStv 184)
TX Time: 19h00
Genre: Reality Competition, Adventure, Travel

Race Across the World 2

If you were tasked to race across the world with limited cash and nothing in the way of modern technology, how do you think you'd fare?

This series will see five teams attempt just that.

Race Across The World takes you on the trip of a lifetime, following the contestants as they embark on an epic and adrenaline-fuelled adventure, travelling into the unknown without the trappings of modern life.

The five pairs this season will race from the top to bottom of Latin America: from Mexico City to the most southernly city in the world, Ushuaia in Argentina.

They will leave behind their smartphones, Internet access and credit cards, and will be armed with only the cash equivalent of a one-way airfare.

In a competition that sees the teams travel through rather than fly over, their skill, ingenuity and determination will be tested to the extreme as they race through some of the world's most beautiful scenery, form bonds and friendships across cultural divides and rely on the kindness of strangers in order to stand the best chance of winning.

Carol's Second Act

Channel: Vuzu (DStv 116)
TX Time: 18h30
Genre: Comedy

Carol's Second Act

Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond) stars in this comedy about a woman who embarks on a unique second act after raising her children, getting divorced and retiring from teaching: pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor.

On Carol Kenney's first day at work, she's prepped with an abundance of life experience, people skills, talent and enthusiasm, advantages the chief resident and other newly minted interns don't have - or immediately appreciate.

Carol's first-year partners on rounds are Lexie, who's very nervous due to the pressure on her to succeed as the first in her family to go to college, and Daniel, a 2018 Harvard Medical School grad who's already published in the New England Journal of Medicine... twice.

Carol will need to win over their chief resident, Dr. Maya Jacobs, an all-business disciplinarian who doesn't care for Carol's chatty, outgoing nature.

Fortunately, Carol has a couple of friendly faces at the hospital, including Dr. Frost, the accomplished senior attending physician who finds her charming, and her bubbly daughter, Jenny, a successful pharma sales rep who catches the eye of Carol's fellow doctors.

At age 50, Carol is a medical intern who must sink or swim with peers who are half her age, and it's her enthusiasm, perspective, and yes, even her age, that may be exactly what will make her second act a great success.

In the series premiere, "Pilot": Carol enthusiastically begins her first day as an internal medicine intern, but has a rocky start when she disregards direct orders from her boss in order to help a patient.

Also, Carol meets Dr. Frost, a senior attending physician who may be the ally Carol needs in her second act.
