They cut his eyes open. A piece of cotton wool gets held against the cut with crooked fingers.
But he smiles because club rugby is not just a pastime. It's not just blood, sweat, cuts, bruised flesh and egos.
It's about living, or at least giving life to an entire community.
Klubhuis, a documentary series about club rugby, shows that provincial and national rugby are not the only branches of the sport that make fans scream hoarse.
Klubhuis takes viewers on a journey to the heart of the South African rugby landscape; where cameras rarely, if ever, go, where grass fields are a luxury, and the values of rugby – teamwork, discipline, and respect – unite communities on and especially off the field, and give hope for another day.
The producers of Klubhuis traveled the country in search of club rugby stories – from Saldanha to Hawston, from Thabazimbi to Vanwyksvlei.
The series of six episodes was filmed over more than a year.
It found that derby Saturdays and dusk practice sessions are part of where the tears are dried and the victories celebrated and that the clubhouse is an integral part of this.
For many of the players, club rugby is a homecoming, an outcome, a dream to be noticed with the hope that one day they will also play on the big fields of the country and the world.
In Hawston near Hermanus, former Springbok Gio Aplon is the golden boy who still inspires many young players.
In Prince Albert, Jason Jaftha, a former professional referee, preaches rugby from his rulebook, and in the shadow of Johannesburg are the Raiders, a club that believes in harnessing opportunities and second chances.
The six clubs and the dates on which they will be broadcast are as follows:
13 December 2024 – Saldanha
20 December 2024 – Northam Rhinos
27 December 2024 – Prince Albert
03 January 2025 – Vanwyksvlei
10 January 2025 – Hawston
17 January 2025 – Raiders

Joe will immediately spot the cause of the property's ongoing water damage, advising to regrade the yard to prevent future flooding.
Noel will see the potential in the home's exterior, leaning into its Cape Cod style and suggesting the addition of an entryway and portico with a new stone walkway.
She also will tackle the cramped kitchen and living room so the family has space to gather, either for meals or around the piano.
In the meantime, Joe will continue his search for structural red flags, uncovering a cracked foundation and leaky plumbing, both of which will take a bite out of the budget.
Future episodes will feature fixes ranging from abating lead paint and asbestos to repairing cracked walls and sloping floors, but once Joe and Noel address every flaw, families will enjoy gorgeous, safe homes.

Channel: Disney+
TX Time: 00h01
Genre: Documentary, Music
This documentary follows Elton John as he looks back on his life and the astonishing early days of his 50-year career in this emotionally-charged, intimate and uplifting full-circle journey.
As he prepares for his final concert in North America at Dodger Stadium, Elton takes us back in time and recounts the extraordinary highs and heartbreaking lows of his early years and how he overcame adversity, abuse and addiction to become the icon he is today.
With candid interviews and newly revealed archival footage, co-directors R.J. Cutler and David Furnish, Elton John's husband, paint a riveting and highly intimate portrait of a musical icon and trailblazer.
Icon, beyond a doubt. Trailblazer, always. But even though Sir Elton John has held the bright spotlight of fame for decades, there's still much of his life behind those spectacular scenes that we haven't yet glimpsed.
Until now.
This is a portrait of the artist as he looks back on his life and forward to a climactic farewell show at Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium.
We begin at that same stadium, but in 1975 at the first peak of John's fame, when he played to more than 100,000 fans over two nights.
Weaving together intimate interviews with never-before-seen archival footage and photographs, Cutler and Furnish slowly reveal the megastar, from his prodigious childhood talent, through all his self doubts and demons, to where he has landed today.
Fans will know some of this story from John's autobiography and the Rocketman biopic. But nothing beats the rare images on display here, or the star's own candour.
Even with the highs, lows, and heartbreak John recounts, the deepest emotional impact comes from the love and family that little Reginald Dwight found at last with Furnish, and continues to share with the world.
