Rob and Rylan's Passage to India

Channel: BBC Earth (DStv 184)
TX Time: 19h00
Genre: Travel

Rob and Rylan's Passage to India

Following their Grand Tour of Italy, Rob Rinder and Rylan are taking things to the next level and heading out of art galleries and into the teeming streets of one of the world's oldest and greatest civilisations: India.

But can the art and culture of India help them to lead better lives?

This time the pair are following in the footsteps of Rob's favourite novelist, E.M. Forster, who a century ago wrote A Passage to India and changed the way the world saw the country.

As Rob and Rylan embark on their own journey through the country, they hope to discover how its ancient wisdom, art and culture can challenge them - personally, intellectually and physically.

They begin their journey in Delhi, India's capital and home to 34-million people, almost four times the population of London.

After immersing themselves in the chaotic street market of Chandni Chowk, where Forster began his journey, they escape the hectic streets by heading for Humayun's Tomb, a serene masterpiece of 16th-century architecture that was to inspire the Taj Mahal.

Delhi is now a city of jaw-dropping extremes of wealth and poverty.

Here, Rob and Rylan meet billionaire art collector, Shalini Passi, who proudly shows them her staggering collection of contemporary art.

But they also head out on to the streets with activist Naveen Koomar, who comes from a caste or social class that was traditionally seen as the lowest of the low - the Dalits.

As a rapper he's built up a big fanbase by rapping about social problems. He invites Rob and Rylan to perform their own self-penned rap, out on the street...

But the streets of Delhi are where amazing art of all kinds can be found.

The pair are impressed by the Lodhi colony, a part of town where every building is covered in giant paintings.

It's a kind of open-air art gallery, accessible to all - even the city's much-respected and revered cows, who wander the streets at will.

Their journey ends next to a giant rubbish dump, where a famous community of puppeteers, jugglers, acrobats and street performers have made their home.

This is the Kathputli colony, and master puppeteer Puran invites Rob and Rylan to try pulling a few strings themselves, becoming puppeteers in a performance for hundreds of the children who live at the camp...

Paddy and Chris: Road Tripping

Growing old (dis)gracefully?

Facing down 50, Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris are on a quest to crack the code of ageing well, seeking secrets from the Europeans who do it best.

Sweden

Paddy has just turned 50, and Chris is not far behind. Some might say they are well and truly middle aged now.

So, they are on a mission to find out how to grow old gracefully, and possibly disgracefully, and discover ways to make the years ahead their best ever yet.

There are blokey bants and plenty of soul-searching as they head to Europe on a road trip, starting with Sweden.

They meet some of the healthiest, happiest, 'well-preserved' and long-lived people alive. And they take a deep dive to discover a few brilliant and madcap midlife secrets on the planet.

In episode one, Paddy and Chris head to Sweden, one of the healthiest and most outdoorsy places on Earth.

They face off their 50 years of age and classic midlife tropes by plunging straight into mastering the art of the Nordic mindset of 'friluftsliv', which means getting back to nature and embracing the great outdoors.

Swedes swear by 'friluftsliv' to restore body confidence, calm stress levels and ultimately improve mental health.

Paddy and Chris sweat it out in a Swedish sauna, where all the men are an average age of 70 and let it all hang out as naked as the day they were born.

They train primal-style with a diehard Swedish 50-year-old in a 'forest gym' and play the national team sport of ice hockey - although neither have been on ice since they were boys.

There is also some fairground rollercoaster joy, all with the perfect excuse of having fun and helping to turn back the clock.

Along the way, there is banter in their classic, old Volvo, stunning stop-offs, truly breathtaking scenery and some proper soul-searching from the old mates.

No Swedish midlife trip is complete without friendly and flashy boys toys, such as a hydrofoil Candela boat, or fishing for and eating a Swedish delicacy – golden seaweed, which is a Swedish health food.

There is also a big man versus nature challenge at the end with a stunning but arduous hike on a remote island, followed by an ice-cold swim across a lake for final reflections and some Swedish 'fire water' around a firepit.

The question is, when push comes to shove, how are their stress levels and body confidence, and can they step away from their hectic, daily lives to fully connect with nature and get the reboot they need?

Greece

For the second leg of their European health adventure, Paddy and Chris touch down on the rocky Greek island of Ikaria, nicknamed the island of longevity.

One in three Ikarians live well into their 90s, 10 years more than most people in the UK, and Paddy and Chris are on a mission to find out how.

Their first stop is a village in the Highland Plateau where the majority of the really old-timers live.

They meet a typical Ikarian family, who embody the simple way of life, and are set to work earning their self-sufficiency stripes.

Whilst Chris gets to grips with milking the family's goats for cheese, Paddy helps dad and daughter put up a fence in their fields.

It's hot and hard work, but the lads are rewarded with a beautiful Ikarian feast, the islanders' organic diet also being a key ingredient to long life.

Next, Paddy and Chris head to the south of the island to meet Stavros, a 78-year-old fisherman.

They might be more hindrance than help in bringing in the catch of the day, but as they head out into the Aegean Sea, the lads endeavour to find out if the Ikarian habit of not retiring helps to put more miles on the clock.

Some Ikarians put their longevity down to their stress-free lifestyle and when it comes to winding down, the island has it all, including surf.

Novices Chris and Paddy hit the waves for a stress-busting surf session that's more wipeout than Hawaii Five-0, but both agree it definitely releases feel-good endorphins.

Having de-stressed, the lads decide to have a night out Ikarian style, which much to Paddy's disappointment is less Bacardi Breezers and more backgammon.

All over the island, men can be found playing this board game, and it's not just a bit of fun.

Board games like Backgammon are thought to keep the brain healthier for longer. Chris tries to teach Paddy, but it doesn't go well.

For their penultimate day on the island, Paddy has a challenge up his sleeve designed to test their mettle, get them out of their comfort zone and build their mental resilience - rock climbing.

Under the guidance of pro climbers Nick and Evangelos, and with all the appropriate safety gear, they go about scaling a 20-metre-high, almost vertical rock face.

With a fear of heights, it could be a challenge too far for Chris.

After facing their fears on Mikri Pounta, their final day on the island sees Chris and Paddy back on more familiar ground - well on two wheels anyway.

They head to the hills on scooters and join one of the island's famous village parties, a panigiri, which is a festival that celebrates a saint's day, and every village on the island has at least one.

After another big welcome plus feast, Paddy decides to give something back with a game from home - bingo.

Luckily, he doesn't go anywhere without his bingo balls, but will this beloved game travel? And what will both learn from their Ikarian adventure?

Switzerland

For their final journey, Paddy and Chris are heading to Switzerland to explore its multi-million-pound wellness industry.

The lads travel to one of the country's top wellness resorts for a full body MOT to assess how well they're ageing.

After a consultation with specialists, they're put through a rigorous training programme that reveals their true biological ages, surprising them both.

Paddy, also eager to address his thinning hair, travels to Zurich to a men-only clinic to explore available treatments.

Will he be able to turn back the clock and reinstate his crowning glory?

Although Switzerland has a wide array of anti-ageing procedures, the lads quickly learn that shortcuts are helpful, but they can't neglect the basics of living a healthy life.

So, for their final challenge, they join cycling legend Fabian Cancellara for a heart-pumping ride through the scenic Swiss countryside, including part of the Tour de Suisse.
