Naked & Afraid: Solo

Channel: Discovery Channel (DStv 121)
TX Time: 20h55
Genre: Reality

Naked & Afraid: Solo

Naked & Afraid survivalists have endured the most grueling environments on Earth and proved the value of teamwork in overcoming brutal conditions.

In this all-new series, eight of the franchise's most battle-tested survivalists will attempt to endure 21 days completely solo.

This series takes place in some of the most remote and harshest environments in the world - and in locations spread out over three continents.

Whether it's a bug-infested South American rainforest, a frigid African scrubland or a blistering Mexican jungle, each episode follows multiple survivalists as they take on the most difficult challenge of their lives.

With no one to lean on for help, their success depends solely on their own ingenuity, skills and will to survive.

Enduring 21 days naked with a partner is hard enough.

Enduring 21 days solo will test the most experienced survivalists in the world - and bring many to their knees.

Naked & Afraid: Solo will bring back some fan favourites from the franchise, including:

Kaila Cumings, a bladesmith and avid bowhunter who seeks redemption from a previous early tap-out in her XL Next Level challenge in the Amazon;

Terra Short, a trans woman and archer who feels most at home in the wilderness with just their skills and a knife;

Cheeny Plante, a jack-of-all-trades who, as a SERE instructor, has taught critical survival skills to Air Force combatants; and

Jamie Frizzell, a no-nonsense lifeguard, adventurer and bushcraft instructor who survived a 21-day Tribes challenge but tapped on day two of XL Next Level in the Amazon.

Joanna Lumley's Trans-Siberian Adventure

British actor Joanna Lumley (Absolutely Fabulous) last visited the USSR in 1966 on a modeling job.

Almost 50 years later, she finds herself back there on a romantic rail trip from Hong Kong to Moscow via China and Mongolia.

It's a journey of nearly 6,000 miles from east to west taking in a panorama of vistas, people and places – and immense superpowers steeped in rich history and radical change.

Hong Kong

What will Joanna make of Hong Kong – a place she last visited when she was four?

She begins her eccentric, 6,400-mile journey to Moscow in this illuminating region.

Next, in Beijing, she meets a woman claiming to have known the last Chinese emperor's favourite concubine.

From here, she stops at the Great Wall and travels overnight to Mongolia via the Gobi Desert.

Mongolia

Joanna reaches Mongolia, the mid-point of her 6,400-mile journey along the storied rail route.

Here, she spends time with nomads and visits a giant Genghis Khan statue.

In the capital, Ulan Bator, she tracks down the famous throat-singers.

Next, bound for Russia and the Siberian leg of her trek, she experiences a spot of bother at the border.

Russia

In the final part of her epic trek, the Joanna crosses Siberia.

She visits one of the world's deepest lakes, meets an oligarch and visits Yekaterinburg, where Russia's last royal family were executed.

Moving on to Moscow, she explores Stalin's nuclear bunker, meets local models and returns to the place where she was photographed in 1966 – which first inspired her to take this trip.

Secret Space Escapes

Channel: Real Time (DStv 155)
TX Time: 23h59
Genre: Documentary Series

Secret Space Escapes

What's it like to leave Earth to explore the unknown? How does it feel to be in space?

What happens when you're in space and something goes terribly wrong?

Secret Space Escapes reveals terrifying accidents, fights for survival and stories of close calls and near misses by the astronauts who survived them.

The series offers chilling accounts of the challenges of space exploration as told only by the explorers who lived them and the men and women in mission control who helped each team avert disaster.

Recounting missions as recent as 2013, Secret Space Escapes will draw you into the emotional experience of space exploration.

Through first-hand accounts by the astronauts who relied upon science, training, colleagues on Earth and, most importantly, their wits, in order to survive launches, space walks, landings, collisions, outages and other dangerous situations that occurred during their missions.

This is the first time that these near-disasters-turned-triumphs have been told solely from the point of view of the men and women who problem-solved each event - there is no narration in the series, and the stories unfold solely in the words of the people who were there.

In the series premiere, "Fire on the MIR": In 1997 astronauts and cosmonauts Alexsandr on MIR deals with a life-threatening cabin fire and an out-of-control cargo ship.

Also, in 2001 astronaut Chris Hadfield's rookie spacewalk takes a terrifying turn leaving him temporarily blinded in space.

HawthoRNe 2

The doors of Richmond Trinity have closed... permanently.

That's the dramatic reality that opens the second season of the medical drama Hawthorne.

The series returns with star and executive producer Jada Pinkett Smith as Christina Hawthorne, a Chief Nursing Officer ready for battle on the front lines of a war against declining patient services and hospital budget cuts.

Hawthorne is told from the point of view of nurses as they struggle against the odds to deliver the best care possible.

As the second season opens, several Richmond Trinity doctors and nurses have been transferred to James River, a failing hospital in terrible shape.

There, Christina butts heads with the ER's head nurse, Gail Strummer, who is extremely set in her ways.

Christina is impressed, however, by the charming Dr. Steve Shaw, who hails from England, and the hard-working ER clerk Marcus Leeds, who has his eye on Camille.

This season, Christina and Tom will try to forge a romantic relationship, especially now that he is no longer serving as Chief of Surgery and can devote more time to patient care and a private life.

Bobbie will once again find herself helping out homeless mother Isabelle.

Ray's lust-hate relationship with Dr. Marshall will hit some snags over Ray's continued feelings toward Candy, who is serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Kelly's confidence as a nurse will slowly build, thanks in part to her work with a nurse (guest star Sarah Gilbert) who's even more insecure.

And Camille takes a step toward adulthood that her mother isn't sure she's prepared to take.

Our Planet II

Our Planet II

From the Emmy Award-winning team behind Planet Earth and Our Planet comes Our Planet II.

At any given moment on planet Earth, billions of animals are on the move.

Captured with spectacular and innovative cinematography, Our Planet II unravels the mysteries of how and why animals migrate to reveal some of the most dramatic and compelling stories in the natural world.

In every corner of our world, at any given moment, billions of animals have someplace important to be.

Giant whales, elusive pumas, tiny red crablets, rapacious locusts, elegant cranes – almost every animal migrates, and whether they're traveling in massive packs or taking long, lonely treks across their territory, these animal groups often intersect in symbiotic ways.

They're driven by instinct, following the sun and patterns carved out by their ancestors over millions of years – and the health of our planet depends on it.

But as the climate warms, our ice caps melt, and the impact of humanity spreads into ever more remote regions of the natural world, can these animals adapt to survive?

Once again narrated by David Attenborough for four new episodes focused on the migratory patterns of dozens of animal species as they embark on often life-threatening journeys to feed, breed, and find new homes.

Eye-popping drone shots of stampeding herds crossing vast savannahs mix with revolutionary low-light camera work in the darkest depths of the rainforest.

Stunning underwater footage shows aquatic creatures swimming in patterns as magnificent as the flocks of birds that soar through our skies.

Each episode represents three months of the Earth's orbit, highlighting major animal gatherings and events to showcase the mind-boggling diversity of the animal kingdom as well as rare and never-before-seen moments of animal behaviour.

Each episode ends in a cliffhanger that links it to the next.

Taken as a whole, Our Planet II tells an unprecedented story about overcoming obstacles on a global scale, and the message at the heart of these action-packed, emotional, unforgettable sequences is simple: to preserve the planet we call home, we must preserve the freedom to move.
