The Victim is a thriller told through the eyes of the plaintiff and the accused.
Set within Scotland's unique legal system, the drama asks the question: who really, is the victim?
Kelly Macdonald plays Anna Dean, whose son was murdered 15 years ago.
She is accused of revealing his killer's new identity online and conspiring to have them murdered.
Has the anger of a grieving mother turned her into a criminal? What is she capable of doing in her son's name?
Hard-working family man Craig Myers is viciously attacked after being identified online as a notorious child murderer.
Should Craig keep his head down or try to prove his innocence? Is he a convicted murderer, or simply the tragic victim of mistaken identity?
The Victim follows the progress of a trial in Edinburgh's High Court, while covering the events leading up to the legal proceedings, and the criminal investigation led by DI Steven Grover - who has his own reasons for wanting to crack the case.
Craig and Anna are pitted against each other, but our sympathies will be divided.
New potential suspects will be revealed and long buried secrets unearthed as the story builds to a final, devastating climax.
In the series premiere: Fifteen years after her son's murder, Anna Dean arrives at Edinburgh High Court for the start of a major court case – but who is on trial?
Six months previously, on Halloween, Craig Myers is viciously attacked and discovers he has been accused online of being the notorious child murderer Eddie J Turner.
The investigation into the online post and the subsequent attack uncovers evidence that DI Grover believes incriminates Anna, but senior officers seem intent on blocking his enquiries.
Meanwhile, the first day of court proceedings brings Craig and Anna face to face and raises the question – is Craig really Eddie, or is this a case of mistaken identity?

Superhero, Fantasy, Drama, Action
Jefferson Pierce is a man with many faces. He is a former Olympic athlete, respected educator and a father of two.
He is also Black Lightning, superpowered protector of the fictional city of Freeland with the ability to sense and harness electricity.
Jefferson is not the only one with powers and multiple faces. His oldest daughter, Anissa, is a medical student, health clinic volunteer and dedicated social activist.
She is also the superhero known as Thunder who possesses the ability to drastically increase her density, giving her invulnerability and super strength for as long as she can hold her breath.
Finally, Jefferson's youngest daughter, Jennifer, is a fiery teen who inherited her father's athletic gifts but not his desire to be an athlete.
Jennifer also inherited superpowers. Her body generates pure electrical energy and she possesses the potential to be more powerful than Anissa or Jefferson and is known as Lightning.
Lynn Stewart is Jefferson's ex-wife but they are still very much in love in addition to sharing the load as co-parents. She's also an expert in metahuman medicine.
Together, the Pierce family faces the challenges of a declined urban community, including a war between a menacing gang that calls itself The 100, and a criminal cartel backed by the Pierce family's nemesis, the infamous gangster, Tobias Whale.
Fortunately, the family has allies in their fight, Jefferson's surrogate father and a former covert superspy, Peter Gambi.
This season, Wayne Brady joins the cast in the recurring role of Tyson "Gravedigger" Spikes, a World War II-era member of the US military who became a "super soldier" after a secret experiment gifted him with enhanced strength, agility, tactical genius, and hand-to-hand combat expertise.
After the war, Spikes defected to the country of Markovia rather than return to a segregated America.
His aim to create a sovereign land for metahumans within Markovia which sets him on a collision course with the ASA and Black Lightning.
In the Season 3 premiere, "The Book of Occupation: Chapter One: Birth of Blackbird": We find Jefferson like never before, in the hands of the ASA with his wife Lynn as Agent Odell tightens his grip on the Pierce family, leaving Jennifer abandoned and Freeland without Black Lightning and Thunder.
But Anissa secretly defies Odell in her alter ego as Blackbird with the able tactical and technical support of Gambi.
In the second episode of the weekly double bill, "Chapter 2: Maryam's Tasbih": With Freeland under full-blown occupation, the Pierce family gets pulled in different directions.
Jefferson and Lynn find themselves at odds with each other.
Meanwhile, Anissa rebels as Blackbird while Jennifer feels powerless despite having powers.
