Nurses

Channel: Universal TV (DStv 117)
TX Time: 20h00
Genre: Drama, Medical Drama

Nurses

Set in Toronto and stationed in every tendril of a busy downtown trauma centre, Nurses sees five recent graduates beginning their careers in a high-stakes hospital with pressure cooker training.

Forming an inextricable bond, the nurses struggle to find a work-life balance that matches and counters the intensity of their new job.

Their interaction with patients, relatives and staff quickly leads them to the discovery that nursing isn't just about biology, chemistry and anatomy - it's also about psychology, compassion and romantic complications.

The nurses include Grace Knight, a young nurse looking for a fresh start, until someone from her past turns up who could jeopardise her career; and Ashley Collins, a wild and unapologetic adrenaline junky who lives for the fast pace of the hospital.

Then there's Keon Colby, a former college football star who's trying to prove he's more than he was on the field; and Nazneen Khan, a whip-smart daughter of a wealthy family in India who moved to Canada to reinvent herself and is now starting her first job ever.

Rounding out the nurses is Wolf Burke, soft hearted and playful, but with a secret that may find him in over his head.

Along with the young team of nurses, there is Sinead O'Rourke, the head nurse and den mother of the new graduates; and Dr. Evan Wallace, the charming and attractive head of the ER who gets all the nurses' attention – especially Grace's.

There's also Nicola Correia-Damude as Dr. Vanessa Banks, the magnetic OBGYN with a cutting wit who never lets Keon forget a mistake.

Face to Face

Channel: CuriosityStream (DStv 185)
TX Time: 20h00
Genre: Documentary Series

Face to Face

A series of comparative portraits featuring two well-known figures, seen through the prism of their rivalry.

Adversaries, opponents, the best or worst of enemies... they have all been groundbreaking leaders in their fields: politics, science, technology, economy or the arts.

For each of them, their rivalry became a driving-force and a constant challenge.

The scale and scope of their contention went far beyond mere personal antagonism, and the results of their confrontation have often changed society and deeply impacted our lives.

Some of the portraits include Nelson Mandela vs FW De Klerk, Steve Jobs vs Bill Gates, Malcolm X vs Martin Luther King and Che Guevara vs Fidel Castro.

7.7 Billion People and Counting

Channel: BBC Earth (DStv 184)
TX Time: 20h00
Genre: Documentary, Nature

7.7 Billion People and Counting

According to the UN, it is predicted that the human population could reach 10-billion people by the year 2050.

For broadcaster and naturalist Chris Packham, who has dedicated his life to championing the natural world, the subject of our growing population and the impact it is having on our planet is one of the most vital – and often overlooked – topics of discussion in an era of increasing environmental awareness.

Chris is worried that a world of 10-billion may simply be too many people for the Earth to sustain, given the impact 7.7-billion humans are already having.

Travelling around the globe in search of answers to difficult and sometimes controversial questions, Chris investigates why our population is growing so rapidly, what impact it is having on the natural world, and whether there is anything that can be done.

Chris travels to Brazil to discover a megacity on the verge of running out of water and an industry expanding to feed our growing numbers – with dire consequences for biodiversity.

In Nigeria, a country set to become the third most populous nation on Earth by 2050, overtaking the United States, Chris visits an extraordinary community surviving against the odds and a school that might hold the answer to a future fall in the birth rate.

Back home in Britain, Chris interviews Sir David Attenborough – like Chris, he is a patron of the charity Population Matters.

Chris also examines the role of falling birth rates around the world, the impact of an aging population, and meets a couple who are struggling to get pregnant through IVF.

With interviews from several population experts, Chris's focus ultimately turns to the impact our levels of consumption are already having, and asks whether the world can rebalance to accommodate the needs of over two-billion more people.

Stacey Dooley Investigates: Face to Face with the Arms Dealers

Stacey meets an arms dealing family in the USA who supply more than 100 countries with high-grade weapons.

She gets a rare glimpse into this strange world - hanging out with the mum who sells all kinds of arms from grenade launchers to sniper rifles, and her son, who makes thousands of bullets for the weapons his mum sells.

Stacey finds out which countries can and can't buy international arms, and sees how deals are made in this most secretive business, which kits out armies, law enforcement agencies, private security companies and individuals.

She goes inside a gun factory to see how weapons are made, checks out the latest in guns with facial recognition, loads a bullet case with gunpowder and learns to shoot one of the world's most powerful sniper rifles.

While she questions the morality of this unusual career choice, and worries about guns falling into the wrong hands, she discovers these arms dealers have their own code of honour and set of ethics.

So - are the weapons they deal protecting us, or killing us?
