My Life Is Murder

Irreverent mystery of the week series, featuring fearless and unapologetic Alexa Crowe (Lucy Lawless) whose unique skills and insights into the darker quirks of human nature allow her to provoke, comfort and push the right buttons as she unravels the truth behind the most baffling of crimes.

A brilliant, charismatic and ever-so-slightly scruffy ex-homicide detective, Alexa has built her life around her career. And she's good at it. Really good.

Alexa has always been the sort of investigator who can't leave an injustice alone. An unsolved murder is like an irritating pebble in her shoe.

So, she becomes a particularly vocal pebble for everyone else until she can solve the case and bring justice to the victim.

Cue former colleague and long-time friend Detective Inspector Kieran Hussey, who quickly realises it would only be a matter of time until Alexa started sticking her nose in cases that intrigued her.

So, he might as well get the benefit of her talent on some of his trickier cases and brings her back to "consult". A favour for a friend, if you will.

But just why did Alexa leave the force? Well, it's kind of a fascinating story, although one of the few Alexa doesn't like telling.

QI 18

Channel: BBC Brit (DStv 120)
TX Time: 20h00
Genre: Quiz Show, Comedy

QI 18

QI is a comedy entertainment show full of quirky questions and fun facts.

Hosted by Sandi Toksvig (The Great British Bake-Off), panellists are rewarded for being interesting rather than right; indeed, credit is often given for wrong answers, providing they are not dull.

This returning series has strong global appeal, and its prestige has attracted a host of international stars to join the panel: previous guests have included Jerry Springer, Teri Hatcher and Daniel Radcliffe.

Season 18 of the show is full of facts about topics starting with the letter Q, but the questions are so difficult the panel almost never get a right answer - so points are only awarded to contestants if they give answers that are deemed "quite interesting".

In the Season 18 premiere, South African comedian Loyiso Gola is one of the featured guests, who have to make sense of the word "Quirky".

Giri/Haji

World-weary detective and family man, Kenzo Mori, travels to London in search of his younger brother, Yuto - long believed to be dead, but now rumoured to have reappeared in London.

Once a troubled but sweet, much-loved kid, Yuto is now wanted for the vicious killing of a yakuza boss's nephew, a declaration of war that threatens to tear Tokyo apart.

The family's honour, and the fragile peace between the warring gangs back home rest on Kenzo's ability to bring his brother home.

Cut adrift from all he knows in London, Kenzo searches a strange city for the truth: is Yuto really alive?

If so, is he behind the cold-blooded murder that ignited the violence now sweeping across Tokyo - and, Kenzo secretly fears, could he be responsible for the monster Yuto may have become?

Kenzo's search catches the attention of two fellow lost souls: DC Sarah Weitzmann - an ostracized police officer who is part of the official investigation into the crime that brought Kenzo to London - and gregarious, half-Japanese rent boy Rodney.

They're outsiders on the inside and two unlikely allies to Kenzo.

However, not everyone in London wants Kenzo around, and as he closes in on Yuto's ghost we realise there are people in London and Tokyo prepared to do anything to keep him from the answers.

I am a Killer 2

Channel: Netflix South Africa
TX Time: 10h00 (all episodes)
Genre: True Crime, Documentary Series

I am a Killer 2

Death row inmates convicted of capital murder give firsthand accounts of their crimes in this documentary series.

I Am a Killer gives those serving life sentences the opportunity to tell their story from their own perspective while interviews with the victims, their families and detectives allow viewers to see both sides of the story.

This emotionally confrontational approach brings you face to face with a killer, making it impossible to watch without your opinions constantly changing during the course of the episode.

The first season re-opened the debate over rehabilitation and restitution in America's criminal justice system.

The Season 2 premiere tells the story of Lindsey Haugen who strangled her boyfriend Robert Mast to death.

Haugen was an army veteran and had a history of abuse from men. Mast had a documented previous history of suicidal idealisation and Haugen claimed Mast had told her on numerous occasions he was depressed and suicidal.

Haugen claimed to be following his request when she took matters into her own hands and murdered him.

While sitting in Mast's car on the morning of 15 September, 2005, Haugen killed him by putting her arm around his neck and choking him for 20 minutes.

When officers arrived they found Haugen frantic and crying. However, while testifying at the police station, Haugen mentioned "I guess I just wanted to kill someone with my bare hands".

Haugen was found guilty of premeditated murder and sentenced to 60 years in prison. She will be into her 90s before she has served her completed sentence, but may be eligible for early parole.

Despite this, Mast's Christian mother and step-father have forgiven her. They visit her regularly in prison and claim they "lost a son but have gained a daughter".

This episode explores themes of forgiveness, sexual abuse, assisted suicide, manipulation and teen depression.

Contributions from the investigating officer, psychologists, Lindsey Haugen and Robert Mast's mother and stepfather give the viewer a 360 perspective of this case.

Haugen's next possible date for parole will potentially be in 2031.
