Season 5

24 is an American action television series created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran and presented in real time, with each season depicting a 24-hour period in the life of Jack Bauer, who works with the United States government as it fights fictitious terrorist threats to the United States.

Broadcast by Fox in the United States and syndicated worldwide, the show aired from 6 November, 2001 to 24 May, 2010. There are 124 episodes (and a TV movie) in eight seasons.

24 originally premiered in South Africa on M-Net on Thursday 31 January 2002, at 19h00. It was moved to DStv's M-Net Action channel for the 7th season, as well as the preceding television movie 24: Redemption. It later aired on e.tv (first season only) and TopTV's Fox Entertainment channel.

When Fox Entertainment became FOX in 2013 the final season aired on the new channel, which was broadcast simultaneously on TopTV and DStv. See "Seasons" below for seasonal broadcast dates and times by channel.

Season 5

The 5th season occurs approximately 18 months after Season 4.

Unlike the other seasons, Season 5 has a prequel. After faking his death in Season 4, Jack is now working on an oil-rig under the name Frank Flynn in California.

He is renting a room at the home of a single mum – Diane – and her 15 year old son Derek. Four days before season 5 starts, Jack had been in contact with Chloe.

Season 5 starts with the assassination of David Palmer, Michelle Dressler, and the attempted nurders of Tony Almeida and Chloe O’Brien – the only 4 people to know that Jack was still alive. Jack is being framed for these murders.

Meanwhile, President Logan is scheduled to sign an anti-terrorism alliance treaty with Russian President Yuri Suvarov at his retreat in Hidden Valley, California.

This is believed to be the motive behind most of the day's events, as the Russian terrorists led by Vladimir Bierko who carry out the day's attacks believe the treaty will increase the suffering of their people.

As the days events unfold, Jack learns that the plot behind the attacks lead deep into the White House. He learns that the events are part of a massive government conspiracy lead by President Charles Logan, Chief of Staff Walt Cummings, former CTU head Christopher Henderson, and a group of mysterious men who monitor and influence the actions of Logan, led by a man identified only as Graem.

Their initial plan was to release nerve gas on Russian terrorists and to use that as an excuse to invoke the military terms of the treaty that was signed early that day, allowing Logan to secure his oil interests in Central Asia.

Former President David Palmer finds out and tries to stop them, so he is killed and Jack is framed for the crime, thus setting up the day's chain of events.

Subplots and Events affecting future Seasons

The four people who know Jack faked his death are all assassination targets. David Palmer and Michelle Dessler are killed. Tony Almeida was killed later in the day. Chloe was attacked, but saved by Jack.

Jack comes into contact with people who thought he was dead, including his daughter Kim Bauer and former girlfriend Audrey Raines.

A power conflict develops between new CTU director Lynn McGill and Bill Buchanan.

Chloe has to cope with the death of Edgar Stiles. In addition, the man she earlier slept with turns out to be a mole.

Jack's attempt to reconnect with Kim is unsuccessful; she wants time before he is in her life again.

Chloe and later Audrey go against their superiors to help Jack, leading to officials from the Department of Homeland Security attempting to use Audrey to their advantage.

Homeland Security divides internally when Karen Hayes begins working against her assistant Miles Papazian in order to aid Jack.

Logan attempts to use all of his power to prevent Jack from releasing evidence.

The Chinese, remembering the invasion of their consulate and accidental killing of the Chinese Consul, kidnap and torture Jack Bauer at the end of the season, leaving a cliff-hanger for the next season.
