Music is My Life provides an engaging account of the life of Joseph Shabalala and his rise to international fame with his band Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
The film covers the full breadth of the singer's life, from his early years in rural South Africa to the band's global success in the wake of their contributions to Paul Simon's massively successful Graceland – which, despite breaking rank with the cultural boycott, went on to become one of South Africa's most-loved albums.
As well as the story of that album, including archive footage from the recording sessions, the film also documents the complex history of Isicathamiya music – the musical idiom whose boundaries he helped to expand – in terms of the political and musical forces that helped to form it.
Along with footage from the Graceland recording sessions, the film introduces us to many of the luminaries who worked with Shabalala, including Dolly Parton, Whoopi Goldberg and Stevie Wonder.
Filmed over five years, Music is My Life gives extraordinary access to Shabalala's creative process.

The moniker, borrowed from the popular film due to the stunning similarities between the movie and the trial, was a label Warmus couldn't shake.
The story of an affair that seemingly led to murder was a sensation, quickly garnering front-page news status and relentless coverage across television.
Reporters from around the world descended on Westchester County to scrutinise every word of testimony, every nuance of Warmus' body language and every detail of her wardrobe.
Throughout the in-depth special, Warmus, who never testified in her own defence on the advice of her counsel, shares her truth.
She has always maintained her innocence.
