Docu-Drama, Documentary Series, History
Recounts the epic story of the rival dynasties that forged the history of medieval and early modern Europe.
Shot on location across Europe, the series documents the turbulent conflicts between the French Royal Houses of Valois and Burgundy, and their Plantagenet rivals in England, which erupted with such ferocity in the titanic struggle of The Hundred Years War.
Each episode focuses on a moment in European history and a clash between European houses.
The second season focuses on the historical period marked by religious wars, full of renowned, fascinating characters, such as Mary Tudor, Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots, Catherine de Medici, Philip II of Spain, Henry II and Henry IV of France.
Over the course of six episodes, the season explores the dynastic conflicts of the Renaissance, marked by the religious wars that have shaped both the France and the Europe of today.
These fratricidal wars between Catholics and Protestants have left a permanent mark on France's history of identity.
In fact, the series concludes with the ratification of Edict of Nantes, which was the basis for the principles of religious tolerance and freedom, later advocated during the Enlightenment.
For the first time in the history of France, the distinction is made between political subjects and worshipers, between Church and State.
