BEEF eMedia launches complaint with the Competition Commission against MultiChoice and their oppressive Rugby World Cup sub-licensing deal with SABC. This after they took MultiChoice to court. According to e, the case wasn't dismissed as reported by some media but the court ruled it wouldn't deal with it as an urgent matter. Trouble is, it IS an urgent matter so if it isn't dealt with urgently, there's no rugby on OpenView. See comments. >>

BEEF eMedia calls on an umpire to decide on what's fair when it comes to the Rugby World Cup. They're taking legal action against MultiChoice and SuperSport who won't allow the tournament to air on SABC2 on Openview. Announced their decision pohetically on social media and in ad campaigns in Sunday papers. >>

BEEF SABC calls on MultiChoice to remove the contractual restriction which stipulates that the Rugby World Cup won't be shown on the SABC channels on OpenView. They've reached an agreement for the broadcast of 16 matches on the SABC but these can't be shown on SABC channels on OpenView. i.e. South Africans are being screwed over yet again as a private company wields ownership of the broadcast rights to a national sport. >>

BEEF Over 11,000 members of the Writers Guild of America are on strike, protesting working conditions and pay, specifically with regards to streamers. Changes they're protesting for include an increase in residuals and minimum staffing requirements for shows. i.e. They want structural changes to way in which streaming studios treat writers. They also want them to restrict the use of AI in script writing.

BEEF Glow TV's on-again/off-again relationship with Openview switches to off-again. eMedia has announced that the channel will no longer be available after 28 February. This after Openview yanked the channel back in October 2021 when it was reinstated after a High Court ruling that stated the two entities needed to go through an arbitration process. At the time Glow management (Nis Media) stated that they had a carriage agreement with Openview until February 2023. That agreement is now at its end.

BEEF Openview loses new channel BBC UKTV to DStv. It was originally announced to launch on Openview on 18 October as the BBC's first free-to-air channel in South Africa but it never happened. Suddenly it's on DStv instead, Channel 134 on Family, Access and Easy View. Shows include The Great British Bake-Off (Season 8), Africa with Ade Adepitan and long-running British hospital-based soap Doctors (Season 22). Launches 15 December.

BEEF Omuhle Gela might have flounced from Uzalo but the character of Nomaswazi Magwaza isn't going anywhere. TVSA can confirm that Nomaswazi will remain in the show for current storylines and in the new season, which premieres in March next year. Meaning the beef between Omuhle and Uzalo has been resolved OR the role has been re-cast. We'll keep you posted.

The competition appeal court has ruled that DStv must reinstate eExtra, eToonz, eMovies and eMovies Extra while the Competition Commission conducts an investigation, which could take six months. PS: the channels still aren't actually back yet.

BEEF Judge denies Carole Baskin's legal plea that Netflix pulls the plug on Tiger King 2. She sued the streamer after the release of the Season 2 trailer showing Carole in the footage. Says she has no agreement with them to be in the season. According to Deadline, the judge says the inclusion of the footage won't "cause any immediate harm that cannot be compensated with monetary damages."

BEEF High Court rules that Openview needs to reinstate Glow TV on the platform by noon on Wednesday 20 October after Openview yanked the channel without warning on 1 October. The matter still isn't resolved though. They're going into an arbitration process to try to settle their dispute.

BEEF and VIU head to court in a dispute over the streaming rights of Scandal! and Imbewu. According to Sunday World, VIU's suing eMedia after they cancelled VIU's exclusive streaming rights to both shows, which are now on eMedia's new streamer eVOD. VIU claims that " engineered a contrived cancellation" and wants to stop streaming both shows on eVOD.

BEEF SuperSport restricts SABC's broadcast of upcoming Springbok Rugby tour to "terrestrial free to air television". SABC can only air them on 1, 2 and 3 on analogue. So no broadcast on 1, 2, 3 or SABC Sport on DTT, OpenView or TelkomONE. This despite the fact that ICASA defines Springbok games as national sporting events that must be made available to the South African public by the SABC.
