This season, Alphy is thriving.
As the beating heart of the parish, he lends an ear to everyone, even when they struggle to communicate with one another.
Easter has arrived, and he has organised a full programme of celebrations that the village has enthusiastically embraced - well, most of the village.
One notable dissenter is Reg Wait, who spends his days outside the church protesting with a homemade placard, convinced that Christianity has become too commercialised.
The festivities take a tragic turn when a gunshot rings out and Reg is found dead, apparently having taken his own life.
Geordie, however, suspects foul play.
Reg had been seen arguing with his fiancée shortly before his death, and the discovery of a second bullet raises further questions.
As the investigation deepens, it becomes clear that there may be more to the decorated war hero than first meets the eye.
Meanwhile, Alphy is gaining a reputation for dating many of the village's eligible women, earning him Geordie's teasing nickname: "Reverend Love-'Em-and-Leave-'Em."
Beneath the jokes, however, Alphy worries that he may not actually be capable of falling in love.
The murder investigation provides a welcome distraction until it leads him to Meg, a librarian with whom he immediately shares a spark.
The attraction is clearly mutual, but Meg refuses to make things easy for him and won't even give him her phone number.
She has no intention of becoming another woman mooning after him.
Love is also in the air elsewhere.
Geordie repeatedly catches Larry and Miss Scott secretly canoodling around the police station.
At home, Geordie feels increasingly like a spare part as Cathy keeps her worries to herself.
Facing the arrival of a computer system that threatens jobs at Swinnerton's, Cathy finds herself questioning a career that no longer fulfils her.
Leonard, meanwhile, is troubled by Daniel's decision to reconnect with his parents and stay with them.
Fearing Daniel may be hurt, Leonard tries to discourage him.
Then Leonard receives news that his estranged father has died - and did not want him at the funeral.
Confronted by the absence of the fatherly love he never received, Leonard realises he is denying Daniel the opportunity to rebuild his own family relationships.
He lets Daniel go, but keeps the news of his father's death to himself.
As the case unfolds, Alphy encounters someone who never believed they were worthy of love.
The experience prompts him to take a risk of his own. Instead of asking for Meg's number, he gives her his.
Now the question is: will she call?
