Multi-platinum recording artist, actress and entrepreneur Selena Gomez and author and political activist Stacey Abrams formed a unique bond during the 2020 presidential election and, on the eve of another election, this film marks a new collaboration for the duo.
The documentary champions the brave, bold and unapologetic actions, both sung and spoken, of some of the most iconic female musicians of all time.
The film is an emotional and inspiring journey filled with archival footage, interviews and personal accounts from a powerful group of female artists including:
- present-day Rhiannon Giddens who summons deep-rooted emotions on a banjo,
- H.E.R. who processes her grief through her 2020 ballad I Can't Breathe,
- Melissa Etheridge who bravely came out on TV at the peak of early 1990s homophobia,
- and Mickey Guyton's present-day struggles as a black woman in country music.
Guided by journalists including J Wortham, Puja Patel and Clover Hope, we are also reminded of the groundbreaking women of '90s hip-hop, highlighting artists like Queen Latifah and Salt-N-Pepa, as well as an interview with Kathleen Hanna whose Rebel Girl reflected the rage and anger of the Riot GRRRL movement.
Gomez and Abrams credit the legendary musicians Linda Ronstadt and Tracy Chapman for blazing the trails that provided them their motivation for their work.

X Trillion
Channel: TLC Entertainment (DStv 135)
TX Time: 18h35
Genre: Documentary, Nature
Follows the gruelling journey of eXXpedition's all-women crew led by British skipper and ocean advocate Emily Penn, as they sail 3,000 miles across the North Pacific Ocean through the densest accumulation of ocean plastic on the planet – in order to make the unseen, seen.
The 14-women international crew was made up of scientists, filmmakers, circular-economists, engineers, teachers, packaging designers and creators – but very few were sailors.
It is a life-affirming story of adventure, discovery, science, solidarity and a call to action that burns with optimism.
The film explores the practical and emotional responses to one of the biggest global challenges of our time, as the crew leave families and land behind, to battle high seas, storms and sea sickness, and carry out cutting-edge microplastics research.
For the first time the film turns the camera on the extent of the plastic pollution crisis in one of the most remote places on Earth.
The crew recorded an average of half a million pieces of microplastics per square kilometre here, and that was only on the surface.
Who knows how much is in the 5,000 metres of water beneath. The scientific data they gathered has been used as part of ten international research projects.
The overall mission aboard Sea Dragon, a 72ft scientific exploration vessel included two voyage legs of which X Trillion is a film about the first.
Leg 1: Oahu, Hawaii to Vancouver, British Columbia and Leg 2: Vancouver to Seattle where the journey ended.
It set out for answers to questions like: Where is the plastic coming from? What does it mean for our natural world and human health?
And what can be done to solve it?
