Maniac

Maniac

Channel: Netflix South Africa
TX Time: 00h01 (all episodes)
Genre: Comedy-Drama, Sci-Fi

Set in a world somewhat like our world, in a time quite similar to our time, Maniac tells the stories of Annie Landsberg (Emma Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Jonah Hill), two strangers drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial, each for their own reasons.

Neither of their lives have turned out quite right, and the promise of a new, radical kind of pharmaceutical treatment claims can repair anything about the mind draws them and 10 other strangers to a three-day drug trial that will, they're assured, with no complications or side-effects whatsoever, solve all of their problems, permanently.

Things do not go as planned.

The Good Cop

Channel: Netflix South Africa
TX Time: 00h01 (all episodes)
Genre: Buddy Comedy, Police Procedural

Tony Danza plays Big Tony, a lovable yet not exactly honorable, former NYPD officer who never followed the rules.

He lives with his son TJ, a brilliant, straight-laced NYPD detective who makes a point of always following the rules while solving Brooklyn's toughest cases.

This "odd couple" become unofficial partners as Tony Sr. offers his overly-cautious son blunt, street-wise advice.

Psych 2

Channel: eExtra (OpenView HD 105 / DStv 195 / StarSat 489)
TX Time: 18h00
Genre: Drama, Police Procedural

Psych mixes comedy with its crime and features a somewhat eccentric lead character – Shawn, a police psychic with absolutely no psychic abilities.

Raised in Santa Barbara by a family of cops, Shawn possesses uncanny powers of observation honed by his police officer father, Henry, who drilled young Shawn to note even the smallest of details from his surroundings as a way of grooming him for his inevitable career in the family business.

In the Season 2 premiere, "American Duos": Shawn and Gus go undercover as talent show contestants to investigate a number of failed attempts to kill one of the judges.

I've tried and tried with Maniac but I've given up after five episodes.

The concept's great but the story lacks the essential components of clarifying Who, What, Where and When, especially in the scenes where they've taken the pills - and especially because these scenes go on for entire episodes.

It makes it feel as if you're watching a new series every episode - but a series that doesn't properly clarify who the characters are or when the action takes place or - most importantly - what their purpose is in relation to the bigger picture and the lead characters.

I don't need everything spelt out for me, but if I'm spending over half an hour of my time watching a show, I need to understand why I'm watching what I'm watching.

The show gives some answers but this is after long scenes of unclarity with too much unnecessary action, which makes me worry that it isn't going to get to the point, even at the end.

In a nutshell I found myself having too many out of body experiences during it... my mind drifting to other matters or other shows, which is why I've stopped.
