The first ever South African version of reality show The Cut premieres on SABC1 tonight (Tuesday 29 August, 21h00) and the 16 contestants have been revealed.

SABC1 announced in June this year that it had acquired the rights to make a local version of Tommy Hilfiger's successful show, and later that month revealed that it would be hosted by You're Hired star Claire Mawisa.

The Style Council judges are Felipe Mazibuko, Palesa Mokubung and Nathan Reddy.

A major difference from the US version is that the show will not be dedicated to fashion but will incorporate other disciplines related to the broader world of design. It will not only be about designing clothes - it will be about designing lifestyle.

Tasks will test contestants' social, business and creative skills.

The channel said they were looking for contestants who will "show their unique sense of style and creativity to prove they have the necessary tools to survive and succeed in the high-stakes design industry".

The average age of the contestants is 24 and there is an even split between males and females.

They come from the following cities:

Johannesburg (4)
Cape Town (3)
Durban (2)
East London (1)
Pretoria (1)
Soweto (1)
