Supersterre is an Afrikaans language singing talent show created by South African singer Patricia Lewis and produced by Lewis and her husband Mark Whitehead in which contestants work with a celebrity coach each week and are eliminated by public vote until one winner remains.

The show premiered in 2005 as a four-minute insert on Patricia's television show Blonde Ambisie (Blonde Ambition) and developed into a show of its own in 2006.

The series proper premiered on SABC2 on Friday 25 August 2006, at 19h30. See "Seasons" below for seasonal broadcast dates and times.

Season 2

The singing talent show Supersterre returned to SABC2 for a third season and premiered on Friday, 7 September 2007 at 19h20 (10 minutes early to accommodate the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup).

It aired in the normal timeslot of 19h30 each Friday afterwards and was won by Kobus Muller.

Auditions for the season began in April 2007 at the KKNK National Arts Festival in Oudtshoorn.

The show then travelled across South Africa and auditions were held in Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal, the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and North-West provinces. Smaller towns visited  during the search include Upington, Kuruman, Vryburg, Potgietersrus and Middelburg.

Show creator and singer Patricia Lewis and Season 2 winner Shaun Tait performed at each venue and the competition received over 5000 entries across the country.

After the first round of auditions the top 150 entrants attended a second round of auditions in Johannesburg where the final ten contestants were chosen.

The age range of finalists is 15 to 27. The division of finalists in terms of where they come from:

Western Cape: 3 contestants
Eastern Cape: 1 contestant
Gauteng: 3 contestants
North-West: 1 contestant
KZN: 1 contestant
Upington: 1contestant

The winners prize: a Supersterre trophy, a recording contract from Sony BMG as well as R100 000 cash - a new addition to the prize.

Also new to the season were new celebrity faces who coached each of the finalists, namely Karen Zoid, Jennifer Jones, Jannie Moolman and Nicholis Louw.

Idols winner Heinz Winkler was supposed to be included in the line-up but had to withdraw when he was cast in the international musical Rent so Dozi returns to the show to make up the five.

Each of the celebrity's needed to coach their allocated contestants in voice delivery, song selection, dance, presentation and general performance throughout the show. The prize for the celebrity responsible for coahing the winner: R 250 000.

The show was once again hosted by Patricia Lewis and Idols finalist Brandon October and Season 2's judging panel also returned. They are: singer Theuns Jordaan (the head judge),  actress Shaleen Surtie-Richards and radio personality Niekie van den Berg. One guest judge will join the threesome each episode.

Format

Each episode features the contestants working on a song with their celebrity coaches which they perform for a live audience.

Each week a contestant is eliminated by the judges until there are two finalists left.

During the course of the competition viewers can participate by SMS'ing for their favourite contestants, which will result in one contestant  returning for a final three finale showdown.

If the most popular SMS contestant is already one of the final two, the contestant with the second highest number of SMS votes will return.

This returning contestant is called the SuperNova and the public's vote for them counts towards 51% of the judges final decision.

The finale episode is entitled the Supersterre Extravagana and features the announcement of the winner and performances by various guest artists and the celebrity coaches. This will be be held at Carnival City in Gauteng.
