Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is an American fantasy-drama television series created by Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, Zack Estrin and Jane Espenson as a spin-off of Once Upon a Time and takes place in the same universe as Once Upon a Time in present-day Wonderland, with flashbacks to pre-Dark Curse Wonderland.
The series aired in the USA on ABC from 10 October, 2013 to 3 April, 2014. There are 13 hour-long episodes in one season.
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland premiered in South Africa on DStv's M-Net Series Showcase channel on Friday 20 December 2013, at 18h00. It moved to Fridays at 18h30 from Episode 3 (which aired on 3 January, 2014) and went on hiatus after Episode 8 (which aired on 7 February) to accommodate a similar hiatus in the USA.
The series resumed on M-Net Series Showcase with Episode 9 on Friday 14 March 2014, at 18h30. New episodes broadcast weekly, preceded by a repeat of the previous episode at 17h30.
In Victorian England, young and beautiful Alice (Sophie Lowe) tells an impossible tale of a strange new land that exists on the other side of a rabbit hole. An invisible cat, a hookah-smoking caterpillar and playing cards that can talk are just some of the fantastic things she's seen during her adventure.
Surely this troubled girl must be insane. Her doctors intend to cure her with a treatment that will make her forget — everything.
Alice seems ready to put it all behind her, especially the painful memory of the genie she fell in love with and lost forever, the handsome and mysterious Cyrus (Peter Gadiot).
But in her heart Alice knows this world is real, and just in the nick of time the sardonic Knave of Hearts (Michael Socha) and the irrepressible White Rabbit (John Lithgow) arrive to save her from her fate.
Together the trio will take a tumble down the rabbit hole to a Wonderland where nothing is impossible.
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland stars Sophie Lowe (Beautiful Kate) as Alice, Michael Socha (This Is England) as The Knave of Hearts, Peter Gadiot (The Forbidden Girl) as Cyrus, Emma Rigby (Prisoners Wives) as The Red Queen, with Naveen Andrews (Lost) as Jafar and John Lithgow (3rd Rock from the Sun) as the voice of The White Rabbit.
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland was written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (Once Upon a Time), who serve as executive producers. Steve Perlman and Zack Estrin also serve as executive producers, and the pilot was directed by Ralph Hemecker.
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is produced by ABC Studios.
