How to Sleep Well with Michael Mosley

A third of the population regularly struggle with our sleep, which rose to one in two during the pandemic - the highest it's ever been.

However, as more and more people seek help, an explosion in sleep science is enabling the study of sleep in ways not possible before.

What's more, recent breakthroughs are uncovering what's happening in our brains and bodies while we're asleep, getting us closer than ever to understanding the importance of sleep for our health.

Michael Mosley has struggled with his sleep for years and wants to know if the latest insights can help him and the millions like him.

He discovers why cutting our sleep short can be linked to a host of illnesses, including serious diseases like Alzheimer's.

Putting his own sleeping brain and body to the test, Michael signs up for two revealing experiments: wearing a new device that maps his sleep and allows scientists to see how it measures up to an ideal night, and taking part in a sleep deprivation experiment, where he is confronted by the fact that just one sleepless night impacts his cognitive performance.

Revealing the very latest science breakthroughs and packed with personal anecdotes, this programme is a useful guide to anyone looking for tips and insights on how to get the benefits from learning how to sleep well.

All American 4

It's been a long journey in just a short period of time for gifted high school football star Spencer James, from his days as the breakout player at South Crenshaw High to becoming state champion with Beverly Hills High.

His family life, personal relationships and athletic future all changed and grew in ways he never imagined.

But after the rough year that followed that victory, Spencer made the tough decision to return to South Crenshaw High for his senior year with Billy Baker by his side as the new head coach.

With South Crenshaw High saved, and the controversial State Championship behind him, Spencer has his eyes set on the All American game and his future with the NFL, which starts with Toledo State.

But before our Beverly and South Crenshaw students can set their sights on college, they'll have to navigate the tumultuous last half of senior year, including an epic unexpected prom, two graduations and all the complications that come with the growing pains of leaving high school behind and catapulting into adulthood.

In the Season 4 premiere, "Survival of the Fittest": After the earth-shattering events of the Beverly and Crenshaw State Championship, Spencer also needs to come to terms what happened with Coop and Layla.

Now he has the extra pressure of it being early national signing day for football and Spencer must make a major decision about committing.

Meanwhile, Billy struggles to forgive Spencer about helping Jordan.

How to Sleep Well looks intriguing.

I used to sleep three hours a night for years and don't know how I did it when I think back on it.

I try my best to get eight hours a night now and feel much better for it, especially when it comes to concentration and clear mindedness.

You think you can get more work done when you don't sleep, but I get better work done because it's more focused.

I fully believe the theory that lack of sleep leads to cognitive issues like Alzheimer's - our brains need rest to heal our cells.

I saw a fascinating video about this recently, saying that our lives are so stressful now we're in a constant state of flight or fight, which depletes the cells throughout our bodies.

Our ancestors would only go into fight or flight when they were hunting or fighting for their lives, but we're in that state a lot more and our cells can't be properly restored if we don't get enough sleep
