On 2 February, 2013, 17-year-old Anene Booysen was brutally gang raped and mutilated.
She was badly beaten and her abdomen was cut open with her intestines pulled out as she was left for dead on an empty construction site.
She was able to name one of her attackers before she died in a local hospital but the man was later released.
Only one person was ever convicted for her brutal rape and murder, although many believe more men were involved.
The community was at first outraged, searching for answers about how and why this could have happened in their small town.
But through the court case, it slowly started to appear as if the community was trying to protect their own, supporting the only person in the dock, Johannes Kana. A friend of Anene. A man who had no remorse for what he had done.
One year later, it seems that not much has changed in the small town of Bredasdorp since that fatal February night.
Commentators have speculated that the culture of South Africa is still not to take violence against women seriously.
