Gomora cast

The winners of the 4th Royalty Soapie Awards were announced on SABC1 on Saturday night (26 September) and were dominated by TV creators Phathu Makwarela and Gwydion Beynon whose shows won eight awards between them: four for The River and four for Gomora.

The River is produced by their Tshedza Pictures and production house Seriti produces Gomora, which is also created by Kutlwano Ditsele (The Herd) and co-created by Amanda Lane (Is'thunzi).

Gomora won Most Popular Soapie, as voted for by viewers, and The River's win included a double shot for series star Sindi Dlathu as Lindiwe who was named Outstanding Female Villain.

Binnelanders took the honours for Outstanding Soapie and the Skeem Saam writers were acknowledged with Outstanding Writing Team.

The awards were first launched in 2013 by former Generations star Winnie Ntshaba (Modise) and have been on-again/off-again since then.

The awards were filmed in a studio and were hosted by comedian Mpho Popps and TV and radio presenter Lerato Kganyago.

The River is not that good, I think it's just a plot to manipulate us into upgrading to premium

Interesting theory Goku.

I really felt for viewers who only have the SABC because their shows hardly won anything and yet the awards aired on the SABC.

It's like they turned out to be a free advert on SABC1 for DStv shows.
