Cantona James is a South African actor best known for his role as Daniel Lafras on the kykNET & kie soapie Arendsvlei.

Born and raised in Toekomsrus and Greenhills in Randfontein, he matriculated from Randfontein High School in 2012.

He furthered a love of acting he acquired in school by getting a bursary to study at Brümilda's Acting Academy, and later did three years of a BA Drama and Theatre Studies degree at the University of Stellenbosch, from 2017-2019.

He won the 2020 Fleur du Cap prize for Most Promising Student, after dropping out in his final year when he landed his first major role in serial television.

Also in 2020, he won the kykNET Fiësta theatre award in the category Best Upcoming Artist for his roles in the stage plays In Slavenhuis 39 and Jakkals en Wolf Onbeperk.

Cantona got his big break when he was cast in the recurring role of Daniel Lafras in Arendsvlei, for which he was nominated in the category Best Newcomer at the Royalty Soapie Awards in 2020.

He made his first appearance in the role in the Season 2 premiere on 30 September, 2019, and would go on to recur in the role until the series ended with Season 6, in 2024.

During his time on Arendsvlei, he appeared in numerous other series and films, including the short form web series Duiwelspoort for Netwerk 24 in 2020.

He next had another recurring role, this time as Faizel in the second season of the kykNET drama series Projek Dina, first appearing in Season 2, Episode 3, which aired on 15 March, 2022.

Later that year he had a minor role in an episode of the Netflix mystery drama series Blood & Water, appearing in the Season 3 finale.

Cantona landed his first starring role in television when he was cast in the lead role of Ethan, a driver for a Cape Flats gang who turns to spinning to as a way out of his dangerous lifestyle, in the Showmax drama series Spinners.

The series premiered on Showmax on 8 November, 2023 and later aired on M-Net the foillowing year.

He also appeared in the Showmax thriller miniseries Trompoppie, which debuted on the streaming platform on 7 December, 2023.
