Winnie RSA Large 2

Generations star Winnie Modise has joined forces with the KZN government for a new soapie award ceremony called the Royalty Soapie Awards.

The venture was founded by Winnie who sparked the partnership with KZN - which is where the ceremony will be happening. The concept was officially launched at an event in Durban yesterday (Thursday, 4 April) and the ceremony will take place at the Durban ICC later this year, on 2 November.

The nominees and winners will be chosen and voted for by a combo of viewer votes and judges. Viewers will nominate and vote for winners in the following actor/character categories:

Best Lead Actor
Best Lead Actress
Best Male Villain
Best Female Villain
Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actress
Best Newcomer
Best Couple

There's no word yet on whether or not any provision will be made for the fact that various soapies aren't accessible to everyone e.g. isiBaya and Binneland on DStv.

The official panel of judges will consist of industry experts including producers, journalists and scriptwriters. The panel will nominate and vote for these technical and overall categories:

Best Costume
Best Post Production
Best Storyline
Best Soapie
Best Make up
Best Continuity (Technical)
Best Writing Team
Most Popular Soapie
Best Set Design
Best Direction
Best Cast Ensemble

The ceremony will include the handing over of a lifetime achievement award which will be known as the Shaka Zulu Award.

Your thoughts on it all? Do you think the awards will turn into the Generations awards or do you think they have the potential to be representative of all shows? Do you think they'll be hott or not?

They will be hot? Soaps are big in this country, they need their own platform. Its voted by viewers. Why would it be Generations awards?

Well done Winnie, and all the best.

This is the silliest idea yet. But she will cash in on it good for her, and whoever will be incharge of administering the funding from the kzn gov will also cash in, plus the contractors they already have in on this will also cash in. And most importantly between the lazy government officials who will be there and the mediocre actors and actresses of our SA soapies ....they will have another excuse to have party.

Oh no @The general. Generations will win 80% of the awards.

Generations awards? No they won't be if the judges are not biased as the saftas judges I think its a great idea I mean we all know that our soapies are more big than our film industry so big up to Winnie

@Maki, its never the hard working officials who go to this parties, its the lazy ones! You go as a tvsa correspondent or for tvplus or muvhango o ska ipala moo gov officials. IF the industry fails to get Saftas right with the experts involved across the film board; how will soapies , their below average lot get it right? SA journos....8- And it pisses me off more that our tax money is gonna fund this.

@Green.Arrow, who else can fund it in this country? Everything is funded by tax money, even our movies because private sector is not prepared to do that. People go there to ask but Business SA has no compassion or care for the arts in this country. I might even take a chance and say especially if it's black. Just look at theatre to see what I mean. The moment the government pulled away it's funding, theatre died in this country. And don't tell me about the few plays that happen @ Civic, Market Theatre, Baxter or any other theatre, you go there and see how much they are making, how much the actors are getting paid, you will cry. We encourage people to be creative and upgrade our culture in creativity but with what. That is a big problem in this country, no one is prepared to invest. Yes, you won't get anything at first but the industry will grow. Hollywood did not start with the billions they have today. Broadway also. West End in London too. We start somewhere. TALK TO ARTISTS IN THIS COUNTRY and see how frustrated they are. So, yes, they will go to government because at leats that's where they get listened, not as much but they do get something.

And @Nthabiseng - I agree with you, soapies are big more than movies in this country, so big up to Ous Winnie for this initiation. Let's celebrate her instead of knocking her down. Movies in this country is an industry that still needs to be nurtured, as I said before, no one is prepared to put money into it. So, how will it grow? Actors in this country are lucky to even shoot one movie in a year and if they do, the pay is pathetic. They may be in magazines showing off like it's good life but truth is, it's not. You are broke for nine months a year then you shoot a movie for 2 months get your 150 thousand, it doesn't help, you are still broke because you've been living from hand to mouth for the past 9months. That's why most of them are stuck in soapies. There is no movie industry, although we pretend there is. Actors in Hollywood shoot like 5 average movies a year and with mega millions they are paid so even if they don't work for the next year, they are sorted. Not the same in this country. So, I say let's celebrate soapies, they help in job creation, not only for actors but the hundreds of the crew, writers and administration stuff. When the Wild closed down I wasn't sad only for the actors, I was thinking the hundreds of guys behind the scenes who are losing a steady income. BIG UPS TO WINNIE!

05415, I am absolutely FOR department of arts and culture/government funding films , but not soapie awards and other similar frivolous events. If everyone involved and all resources available can be focused on fine tuning the Saftas, I'd be a happy taxpayer. The SA enteratinment industry is too small, Saftas is all they need right now. Anyway, I see this for what it is...some connected below average actress who is in this to line hers and her friends pockets and have a dress up party....Trying to "do" Hollywood in SA when the industry isn't as big as hollywood and doesn't have hollywood money...by taking money that could be used for the poor,...or to grow the very struggling industry.

@Green.arrow the money they will be spending for the awards cannot even cover two episodes of Intersections let alone do a proper movie unless of course you are talking about Bioskop movies on Mzantsi who are made on a shoestring where actors have to perform for  PLATE OF FOOD AND RECOGNITION - exploitation, that's all I say.

But back to soapie awards, if they are below average as you say they are, why are they so popular. Music industry has like 4/5 awards in a year. So, you are saying the people who put their hard work on soapies of which it is a genre on its own, you might not be their target audience but it has it's target audience, more than any TV in this country - about 20 million people tune into soaps in this country, that research that Sunday Times did, you say those people mustn't be given recognition, they mustn't be awarded for their work. I differ, you are just not a soapie person, as much as I'm not a Mzantsi Magic Bioskop fan but does that mean people don't give their heart and soul to work on these productions. They do, most of the time for passion rather than money. Actors in this country are not paid well as peoiple think they are. SAFTAS are also done on tax payer's money, but they are not for soapies only. This is for soapies because they command a lot of following even more than tHE ANC and DA combined. They deserve the recognition...

@05415 it is debatable that the money the kzn arts and culture department will spend on this event is worth a mzanzi magic bioscope movie. Add that to the money they used to fund other useless awards and parties with the connected (The Tiras and Zaneles of kzn), that money could do A LOT for arts and culture in the province, and fund a a few good films. And yes even the bioscopes would be a better investment; I'd rather the money is spent on any project where artists will benefit, rather than a party were a few will cash in. The former is development.

Green.arrow
08 Apr 2013 14:06

And whilst the kzn department is spending their budget on useless parties, I wonder what the other provinces are spending their budgets on. On a different note, I commend the Gautend sports and reacreation department, they do good work...can always do better.

GA having said all that...did u ever try to propose any above average initiatives to government or requested funding from them for better initiatives that taxpayers money can be used for?

I think this is a great initiative, we can only wait and see hoe it turns out. Anyone could have come up with this idea and maybe we shouldnt really focus on WHO is behind it all.

I give Winnie the benefit of the doubt let's wait and see.

Pastry...I suppose in the absense of better ideas and initiatives, the worst available ideas will have way. Its what this is. I'm not in the arts/entertainment industry, I'm a consumer, and not just any consumer, but one whose money somehow ends up backing this events and I have a right to criticize and demand our money be used effectively.

I pray that they do not become another banal joke of awards. Kudos to Winnie aka Khethi for such a refreshing concepts.

GA...having rights is good (its your will how you exercise them) and yes criticizing is also good, however i strongly rebuke the fact that any concept that has government backing should just be shoot down like that. Clearly you have strong issues about how gov spends your money. I suggest in the light of the rights/demands you have...you propose better solutions on how wisely this money can be spend. Action is always louder than any amount of words/opinions/views and rights...talk is cheap.

As far as the SAFTAS are so jealousy of the Generations, i wish Generations could atleast receive the average of 75% of these awards maybe the rest could be received by Muvhango, we are so tired of Isidingo and the rest it is now time for Generations to shine one more time. Best Lead Actor - Menzi Ngubane/ Mcdonald Ndou Best Lead Actress - Katlego Danke/ Sindi Dlathu Best Male Villain - Sello/ KK Best Female Villain - Noluntu/ Meme Best Sup. Actor - Zolisa Xaluva/ Magic Hlatshwayo Best Sup. Actress - Slindile Nodangala/ Nthabiseng Mphahlele Then the game is over!
