Bronze Age

Channel: CuriosityStream (DStv 185)
TX Time: 19h00
Genre: Documentary Series, History

Bronze Age

The Bronze Age saw the rise of urban societies, vast trading empires and military might. How did this come about, and why did it end?

In Part 1: Rise of Civilization: In the region that includes the Mediterranean, the Aegean, Mesopotamia and Egypt, the Bronze Age arrived about 3000 BC and lasted nearly 2,000 years.

What singled out this period and the new societies and cities that emerged? The development of formal writing is one among several important factors.

In Part 2: Masters of Trade: Trade, and in particular trade in luxury goods, drove the commerce economies of the Bronze Age.

This is the time when the first super powers in history, Egypt and Mesopotamia, emerge and dominate the "world" stage of the Mediterranean and Aegean seas and surrounding areas.

In Part 3: Conquest and Collapse: The Bronze Age had the first large urban centres, powerful kingdoms and armies, writing, and trade routes across vast areas.

What led to the collapse of the city-state entities and the end of the Bronze Age?

Possibly a perfect storm of uncontrollable factors that are still being researched.

Wild Alaska: Arctic Summer

The rugged coast of the USA's biggest state harbours the most incredible wildlife in America.

The few short months of an Alaskan summer must sustain the wildlife for the whole year. No matter how hot it gets, winter is just around the corner, and there is much to do before the sun sets again.

Twenty-four hour sunlight brings its own problems: forest fires, Sahara-like sand dunes in the Arctic Circle and the very speed of seasonal change serve as reminders as to how untameable Alaska is.

This is the story of the creatures that endure this harsh reality along the shoreline of Alaska's life on the edge.

Safari babies face immense challenges, as they compete for food, and there's always dangerous predators lurking around the African savannah.

Many animals that live in water come on land to have their babies, which can become a huge challenge for water babies to overcome.

As they begin to get in the water for the first time, and face their first swimming lessons, there are always deadly obstacles in the way.

For Mountain Babies, it can be extremely difficult to survive on the sheer cliffs and snowy mountainsides, as they must battle extreme weather and hungry predators.

They must learn fast if they're going to make it to adulthood.

Angkor: The Sunken Kingdom. In Egypt and Cambodia, archeologists are excavating sites where these civilizations once thrived, to find new answers and give new keys to the downfall.

How did these prestigious civilizations decline and finally collapse?

Their latest discoveries have given new keys to reveal the mystery of these ancient superpowers' downfall.

Drastic and sudden climate change, religious and political crises: the causes are many and at times uncomfortably familiar, as revealed in the first two episodes of "The Dusk of Civilizations," investigating the downfall of ancient Egypt during the Old Kingdom or the Age of Pyramids, and the decline of Angkor's Kingdom in Cambodia.
