Nothing could be worse than the sudden death of parents. One day Nick and Diana Salinger were killed in a terrible car crash, and left their five children all alone.
Charlie, the oldest, has to step in and take care of the family, serving both as father and brother. Bailey, the middle brother, tries to keep everything under control but undergoes an alcoholism problem when he realises he can't do it all.
Julia is a young girl who keeps jumping from one bad relationship to another. Claudia, the youngest girl that plays the violin, has to enter adolescence without any help of parents. Baby Owen was only six months old when his parents died and thus will never know how it feels like to have a mother and a father.
Together, they go through all sorts of problems, from handling their parents' restaurant and trying to keep it running to disastrous relationships and school problems.
Soon they realise that in order to survive no one can be selfish and they all have to help each other. They're a family and have to stick together.
Season 4 revolves around 28-year-old Charlie Salinger (Matthew Fox), the legal guardian of his four orphaned siblings.
Charlie increases his efforts to find a mother for Claudia and Owen, but struggles to hang onto a new girlfriend when he is diagnosed with cancer.
When his chemotherapy makes it difficult to care for both his siblings and the restaurant, he’s faced with having the two younger Salingers removed from their home.
It now falls to Charlie's 19-year-old brother Bailey (Scott Wolf), the family's treasurer and chief problem-solver, to care for Charlie in the same selfless manner that Charlie has so long cared for him.
But Bailey’s efforts to put his own life back on track are jeopardized by a criminal record and a rocky start in his new relationship with Sarah.
Meanwhile, Julia’s marriage to Griffin threatens to fall apart when she wants to return to college.
