Season 70

The Golden Globe Awards are an annual awards ceremony telecast to more than 150 countries world-wide to recognise outstanding achievements in the entertainment industry, both American and foreign, and to focus wide public attention upon the best in motion pictures and television.

The first awards ceremony was held in the USA in January 1944 and they have been held annually ever since.

The Golden Globes are traditionally broadcast in South Africa live on DStv's M-Net Movies Premiere channel (typically at around 03h00), with a rebroadcast later that night on M-Net. The live broadcast aired on M-Net and M-Net HD in 2012, with a repeat on M-Net Movies 1, but reverted to M-Net Movies Premiere in 2013.

The 70th Golden Globe Awards took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California on Sunday 13 January, 2013.

The awards were broadcast live on M-Net Movies Premiere on Monday 14 January 2013, at 03h00, and repeated on M-Net on Monday 14 January at 20h30, on M-Net Movies Premiere on Tuesday 15 January at 20h30 and on M-Net Stars on Saturday 19 January at 18h00. The special was three hours long.

The 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and producer dick clark productions presented The 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Golden Globe winner Tina Fey and Golden Globe nominee Amy Poehler were the hosts.

Seen in more than 160 countries worldwide, The Golden Globes is one of the few awards ceremonies that spans both television and motion picture achievements.

From hosting hijinks to untimely bathroom breaks to sincere moments of Hollywood appreciation, the fun of the Golden Globes is that you truly never know what's going to happen next.

The nominees were announced on December 13 by Jessica Alba, Megan Fox and Ed Helms, with Lincoln topping the film categories with seven nominations, and Game Change leading the television categories.

D'jango Unchained, Argo and Homeland were also among the most mentioned.

About the Globes

The first Golden Globe Awards were held in 1944, at the 20th Century Fox studios. It has since been held annually, at various locations throughout the next decade, notably the Beverly Hills Hotel, "? Club" and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

The event was founded by eight Los Angeles based journalists working for overseas publications, who came together to create the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The awards were initially handed out by the journalists themselves until 1958, when Rat Packers Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr. stormed the stage, with whiskeys and cigarettes in tow, and took over the show, to the delight of the audience.

They repeated their performance the next year (this time at the request of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association) and since then, the stars have hosted the show.

Until Ricky Gervais hosted the 67th annual Golden Globe Awards Ceremony in 2010, the award ceremony was one of two major Hollywood award ceremonies (the other being the Screen Actors Guild Awards) that did not have a regular host; every year a different presenter introduced the ceremony at the beginning of the broadcast.

Each year someone is honoured with the Cecil B. DeMille award which recognises outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. The award was introduced in 1952 and filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille was the first person to receive it.

Indicating the impact that animated films have had on the industry, in early 2006 the Hollywood Foreign Press announced that a Golden Globe would be awarded for the Best Animated Feature starting in 2006 at the 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards. It has been awarded ever since.
