Season 51

The Grammy Awards (originally called the Gramophone Awards), or "Grammys", are presented annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States for outstanding achievements in the record industry.

The awards ceremony features performances by prominent artists, and some of the more prominent Grammy Awards are presented in a widely-viewed televised ceremony.

The Grammys are considered the highest music honour, the U.S. record industry's equivalent to the Academy Awards (Oscars) for motion pictures.

The Grammy Awards show is usually aired in February. In South Africa the awards air live on DStv's Channel O, and a delayed broadcast is shown on M-Net the following day.

The 51st Annual Grammy Awards took place on 8 February, 2009 and were broadcast live from the Staples Centre in Los Angeles for the sixth consecutive time.

The 2009 awards ceremony aired in South Africa on M-Net on Monday 9 February 2009, at 20h30. The special was two hours long.

51st Annual Grammy Awards

For the sixth year in a row, the ceremony was held in the Staples Centre. The nominations were announced on a special concert airing on CBS on December 3rd, 2008, and were posted on the official website afterwards.

To be eligible for an award a recording had to have been commercially released between October 1, 2007 and September 30, 2008. This is for all recordings released in the 2008 recording year.

Neil Diamond was the recipient of the MusiCares Person of the Year award. Lil Wayne topped the nominations with eight, Coldplay garnered seven and Jay-Z, Ne-Yo and Kanye West each earned six nods.

Radiohead, Alison Krauss, John Mayer, Robert Plant, Jazmine Sullivan received five, and Jennifer Hudson, Adele, Danger Mouse, The Eagles, Lupe Fiasco, George Strait, Metallica and T.I. each received four nominations.
