The Durrells
Channel: S3
TX Time: 20h30
Genre: Drama, Period Drama
The Durrells is based on Gerald Durrell's classic trilogy of Corfu memoirs, including the much-loved My Family and Other Animals. Set in 1935, this timeless drama is full of warmth, humour and fun.
The story focuses on Louisa Durrell (Keeley Hawes), whose life is in meltdown. Her husband died years ago and his money has almost run out.
Her four unruly children are going off the rails: Larry (21), Leslie (18), Margo (17) and Gerry (11).
Gerry is obsessed with animals and is about to be thrown out of school.
Larry is a would-be novelist but the worst estate agent in Bournemouth, while the middle two are stumbling into adulthood disastrously.
It is the 1930s, and a woman's options are limited.
Louisa realises she can either continue struggling, marry someone comfortably off but oppressive, or make a radical change and escape from a domestic pressure-cooker, the British weather, uptight Englishness and narrow horizons.
She chooses a rescue mission — somewhere her family can heal before it is too late — so they uproot and move to Corfu.
Over six episodes, the first season follows the Durrell family as they adjust to their new life.
Along the way, they meet new friends, rivals and lovers.
Alexis Georgoulis plays Spiro Hakaiopulos, a charismatic all-round fixer whom Margo initially thinks her mother should marry, although Louisa has other ideas.
Leslie Caron appears as the shrewd and exotic Countess Mavrodaki, who employs Margo as her companion, while Lucy Black plays a fellow Brit and the local doctor's wife, whom Louisa hopes to befriend.
A local man named Theodore, played by Yorgos Karamihos, welcomes the Durrells.
He is wise and knowledgeable about the animals and plant life of Corfu, making him an ideal informal teacher for Gerry.
In the series premiere: Louisa's life is already in crisis as her children spiral further out of control.
Eleven-year-old Gerald is on the verge of expulsion, Larry is failing as both a writer and estate agent, and Margo and Leslie are struggling into adulthood.
In 1935, with few options available, Louisa takes Larry's offhand suggestion and moves the family to the sun-drenched island of Corfu — a cheap, untamed paradise that notably has no electricity.
With barely enough money to survive, they rely on Spiro, who finds them a ramshackle house and installs Lugaretzia as their housekeeper — cheap, but a complete hypochondriac.
Despite the island's beauty, the children quickly revert to their old habits.
Corfu inspires Larry's writing, while Leslie's obsession with shooting anything that moves drives the family mad.
Margo enjoys the idyllic weather but soon gets into trouble with a local monk and must use her charm to resolve the situation.
She is later captivated by Max when Larry's wealthy, party-loving friends Max and Donald arrive.
For Gerry, however, the island is paradise.
Surrounded by fascinating wildlife, he spends his days exploring with his dog Roger and his new mentor, Dr Theodore Stephanides.
Before long, the family home is filled with an eclectic collection of animals and insects that Gerry brings back for study.
Believing their mother needs a romantic prospect, Larry invites Captain Creech to dinner, but his suitability quickly proves questionable when it becomes clear he is not quite what Louisa needs.
