What could be worse than being imprisoned in a locked-down clinic where nothing is what it seems, and nobody believes you are who you say you are?
How about beginning to suspect that they're right?
Sanctuary is a suspenseful psychological thriller that deals with the defining human issues of survival, identity, trust and betrayal in a story that asks: who would you become in order to survive?
The series is based on the novel The Devil's Sanctuary by Marie Hermanson and stars Josefin Asplund (Vikings) and Matthew Modine (Stranger Things).
In the series premiere, "People Can Change": Helena (Hel) Brant visits her estranged twin sister Siri at a luxurious alpine sanatorium, Himmelstal.
Much to Hel's horror, she soon realises the sanctuary is an escape-proof psychiatric hospital and Siri has swapped places with her, leaving her trapped - with a sinister doctor.
She realises that Siri isn't coming back, and that the clinic is far from a place of recovery; it's a facility for studying psychopaths.
Hel is now trapped in a waking nightmare in which no one is who they seem to be, and everyone believes that she is Siri.
Surrounded by the most predatory and manipulative people imaginable, including the director of the sanctuary, Dr. Marvin Fisher (Modine), escape is Helena's second order of business; her first problem is simple survival.
