The Remix SA is a South African music reality competition series in which DJs, singers and musical performers join up and compete for a cash prize and the chance to collaborate with one of South Africa's biggest music stars.
Ten trios - made up of a singer, producer/DJ and musical performer - have to work together to bring new flavour to existing tracks. They must create a unique sound while retaining the authenticity of the song, doing justice to the original composers and artists.
The teams have 3–4 days to prepare, with the guidance of a musical director and producer consultant to ensure it is the best quality ahead of the live performance. The live performance includes a dance spectacle to complement the stage performances.
There are different themes to mix for every week, such as hip-hop, gqom or pop. In the final week, the groups' musical talent is stretched by having to compose their own original composition. Every week brings a new challenge or surprise.
The three celebrity judges - comprising two resident judges and a guest judge relevant to the theme - are big names in the music business and their votes count 100%. The groups must be versatile, talented and charismatic, and the best performance of the week is credited, with the worst going home by elimination.
The final three pairs face off in a finale concert before their mentors and celebrities, summing up their entire musical journey from sound to song. The judges vote for their favorite group and the winners are launched into the industry.
There are two episodes a week: the teams prepare their performances during the Friday episodes and perform during the Sunday episodes. The judges eliminate one team each week, at the end of the Sunday episode.
