When special forces soldier Francois Brink happens upon the scene of a transit robbery there are five robbers and one security guard lying dead. Another guard is dying. And the loot is just lying there, waiting to be taken.
Who would ever know? Who would ever think of him? If you don't have anything, you can't lose anything. But while he's busy loading up his bakkie with the swag, someone is secretly filming him with a video camera.
And then the shit hits the fan...
Patrys le Roux's handpainted linen isn't selling particularly well. Her shop is in financial trouble and her only employee, her sister Thaba, is threatening to leave if she doesn't start taking responsibility for her financial situation.
On that transit vehicle lies Patrys' dreams, her future and her one-way ticket to financial freedom. Now someone has taken the jewels and her entire future is hanging on her ability to get them back. But it's not going to be easy...
Priester is a killer-for-hire in the service of Kruger, a perlemoen smuggler. They had R2.5-million on that transit van and they want it back, even if it means having to kill everyone to do so.
Tommy Falk is the owner of Falcon Security, the company who own the transit vehicle. This enterprise is on its last legs, because in this country cash in transit is a goldmine for anyone who wants to make quick, easy money.
Falk's bit on the side, his secret mistress, is Madeleine Sangster, who works freelance as a courier for the perlemoen smuggle Kruger. She hears that Kruger is waiting for a "package" from Tulbagh to be delivered via a Falcon transit van.
It must be money. Big money. She tells Falk about it and together they hatch a plan: Sangster will use the R50,000 she owes Kruger to organise a transit heist of Falk's own vehicle. They can finally be free, and Falk will have more than enough money to refinance his business.
Now their rose-coloured future hangs in the balance, because Kruger wants her R50,000 back ... and the jewels are gone...
The fly in everyone's ointment is superintendent Joseph Moroka and his right hand man Halgryn, from the Serious and Violent Crimes unit.
Moroka is a methodical, patient policeman who can read the scene of a robbery like a book. They call him "The Crocodile", because when he sinks his teeth into a case he thrashes it to and fro, but never, ever lets go...
