Gilmore Girls is an American television dramedy series created by Amy Sherman-Palladino which follows single mother Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter Rory Gilmore in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, a close-knit small town with many quirky characters.
It explores family, friendship, generational divides, and social class.
The series premiered in the USA on The WB on October 5, 2000 and ended on May 15, 2007, with its seventh season, which aired on The CW Television Network.
Gilmore Girls airs in South Africa on SABC2, M-Net and M-Net Series.
Season 4 premiered on SABC2 on 31 October, 2006 at 19h30.
As season four unfolds, both Gilmore girls are facing major life changes. Surprisingly, Rory chose Yale University, her grandfather Richard's alma mater, over her longtime dream school, Harvard.
This allows her to visit home for laundry runs and the traditional Friday-night dinner with her grandparents at the elder Gilmores' elegant yet oppressive house.
In addition to continued bonding time with Lorelai, Rory stays in contact with her best friend, Lane, who attends a local college and resolutely pursues her musical passion as drummer in a rock band, contrary to her conservative Korean mother's wishes.
Another constant in Rory's life is the presence of intense former classmate Paris Geller, who is now her roommate at Yale.
Rory also explores the world of college dating, after Dean, her high school boyfriend, gets married, and bad boy Jess heads to Venice, California, in search of his father.
Although her daughter has left the nest, Lorelai sees a bright new dream come true when she and chef Sookie St. James, her best friend, finally open their own inn, following the fire that damaged the Independence Inn.
Now happily married and expecting her first child, Sookie must divide her time between her new business endeavour and baby planning.
Meanwhile, Lorelai's longstanding friendship with Luke Danes, the owner of the local diner, gets stronger after his failed brush with marriage.
Continuing to add to the world of Stars Hollow are Miss Patty, the local dance teacher and social commentator, the haughty former Independence Inn concierge Michel Gerard and Kirk, the town's jack of all trades and master of none.
