Season 2

Two Guys and a Girl (originally titled Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place) is an American sitcom created by Kenny Schwartz and Danny Jacobson and based on the life of its creator which revolves around three twenty-somethings who (initially) share a Boston apartment and hang around (and work) at a pizza restaurant.

The series aired in the USA on ABC from 10 March, 1998 to 16 May, 2001. There are 81 half-hour episodes in four seasons.

Two Guys and a Girl originally aired in South Africa on SABC2 (first season only) and SABC3 (Seasons 2-4) from 27 March, 1999 to 10 May, 2003. It later aired on DStv's Comedy Central channel. See "Seasons" below for seasonal broadcast dates and times.

Season 2 originally aired on SABC3 from 13 June to 7 November, 2000, on Tuesdays at 18h00. New episodes broadcast weekly. There are 22 episodes in the second season.

Synopsis

From Mad About You co-creator and executive producer Danny Jacobson comes a comedy about a young threesome as they approach life, love and friendship on their way to adulthood.

The "two guys" are Berg and Pete, who share an apartment and support themselves by delivering pizza.

In the first year of medical school, Berg had a cavalier approach to life and women but now finds himself alternately loving, hating and dating number one med student Ashley.

Pete has abandoned his plans to become an architect and is searching for a career. His feelings for Sharon have developed beyond friendship but she doesn't know it... yet.

Sharon is "the girl" - the upstairs neighbour who hates being a chemical company spokeswoman, although she can't complain about the benefits (i.e. a hefty salary and a shiny "Beemer").

Sharon's boyfriend, Johnny, adores her, but she's not sure what she wants... maybe it's because she's already met the ideal man but doesn't know it.

The series was executive produced by Danny Jacobson, Marjorie Weitzman and Kevin Abbott and is from Twentieth Century Television.

Show History

The show's first two seasons had the title Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place, but from it's third season it was renamed to Two Guys and a Girl. The sitcom lasted four seasons in total.

The show's main stars were Ryan Reynolds, Richard Ruccolo and Traylor Howard. Ryan played Michael "Berg" Leslie, a misfit graduate student who works at Beacon St. Pizza in Boston with his roommate Pete (Richard Ruccolo).

Pete was the more serious (neurotic) student also at Tufts Unviersity with Berg, and was an architecture graduate student.

Their friend Sharon (Traylor Howard) was one of their roommates in college, who works as a spokesperson for Immaculate Chemicals - not an easy job.

There was a distinct difference between the initial season to subsequent seasons, the first season focussing more around the pizza parlour and the regular customers there. In the first season Pete also had a steady girlfriend, Melissa (Jennifer Westfeldt).

One of the main characters was Mr Bauer (David Ogden Stiers), an insane old man who was a frequent customer at the pizza diner. He always believed that experiences from films were his own.

In the second season these two characters were dropped and the show focused more on Pete and Berg as roommates in their building, with Sharon living in the apartment upstairs from them.

Pete eventually decides to drop out of his architecture course and wants to pursue his dream of becoming a firefighter. Berg begins attending medical school to achieve his goal of becoming a doctor. Sharon begins dating Johnny (Nathan Fillion), a jukebox repairman, in season two.

Suzanne Cryer, playing the role of Ashley, was also introduced. She is also attending medical school and her and Berg compete for top honours in their class.

By season three, and with the show's reincarnation as Two Guys and a Girl, Berg starts his medical residency, Pete realises his dream of becoming a firefighter and Sharon and Johnny are married and they take on the responsibility of being superintendants for the apartment building.

Berg begins dating (initially in secret) the crazy girl across the hall, Irene (Jillian Bach), and Pete hooks up with a fellow firefighter, Marti (Tiffani Thiessen).

The fun title sequence showed images of the three stars of the show, along with cartoon images of them drinking. The opening theme music is very similar to the Violent Femmes "Blister in the Sun" song, but was stated as being an original.

For the show's third season the theme music was changed to something "more adult" along with Berg, Pete and Sharon appearing in suits and work clothes, college long forgotten.

The American network ABC moved the sitcom from midweek to a Friday night, which led to declining ratings. They then proceeded to move it back to midweek in an effort to revive it. When this failed, they decided to end the series.

The fourth and final season ended with "The Internet Show". It was an hour-long episode where fans could vote online to decide the final shows outcome. Fans had to choose someone to fall pregnant and they chose Ashley to be pregnant with Pete's child!
