Description

The Young Ones was yet another vicious, dirty brainchild of British comedy duo Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson, who were also responsible for such vitriolic, anarchic shows as Bottom and The Dangerous Brothers.

It was a sitcom about four diametrically-opposed student flatmates living in a run-down student digs. The show had very little storyline - most of the episodes featured insane scenarios and behaviour which were frequently surreal and always incredibly violent.

The show was a break from the traditional polite sitcom format and paved the way for a new era of comedy in which all the old rules were broken.

The four student characters are Neil, the clinically-depressed hippie; Rick, a self-described anarchist and "people's poet" with the delusion that he is in a social class above his own; Vyvyan the violent punk and Mike, the relatively normal ladies' man.

The show took a long time to gain recognition but eventually gained a mass worldwide cult following, particularly after reruns were broadcast in the 1980's on MTV.
