About the Show

Song vir Katryn is a South African television drama series created by Jan Scholtz and produced by Scholtz Films in which alternative musician Valiant Swart plays libertine medical doctor Jinx, who crosses paths with vixen waitress Katryn - who lost her job the night they met and hates all men - to find unexpected romance.

The series originally aired on DStv's kykNET channel and on M-Net from 24 April, 2003 to 7 October, 2004. The M-Net version had English subtitles; the kykNET one did not. The series later aired on SABC2 and the DStv channel kykNET & Kie. There are 26 hour-long episodes in two seasons.

See "Seasons" below for seasonal broadcast dates and times.

Season 1

Rock icon Valiant Swart makes his acting debut in a story perching on the edge of contemporary TV, offering a no-holds barred view of a world that proves life is never easy but always a thriller.

Writer/direcor/producer Jan Scholtz presents a work that looks at all the pitfalls looming in the world of music, showbiz, publicity and everything that makes it tick (often in a very destructive manner).

Song vir Katryn tells the story of an unconventional doctor, who pursues his passions mainly through a rock band after-hours. Valiant Swart is the libertine medical doctor, named Jinx, who has his own band and gallivants through the world on his bike.

Women are crazy about Jinx. At the doctor's rooms where he locums his diary is always fully booked. With women who don't mind taking off their clothes to be examined by the dear doctor. The ladies also flock to his performances at the clubs and rock concerts.

And they all hope to be the one he decides to marry...

But then his path crosses with a poor vixen waitress, named Katryn, who lost her job the night they met and hates all men. Jinx included.

She meets Jinx in a pub on the night she loses her waitressing job and from that day onwards their lives are intertwined. Sometimes without them knowing it. Sometimes without them wanting it.

Although Song vir Katryn is a romantic drama, it is also realistic as it investigates very relevant social problems such as, drugs, HIV/AIDS, prison sentences, pornography on the internet and child prostitution.

Season 2

Song vir Katryn 2 continues the drama and intrigue of vixen Katryn and libertine medical doctor, Jinx (Valiant Swart), a medical doctor by day who sings up a storm with his colleague Slab (Mel Botes) by night.

Katryn used to be an ordinary hellcat-waitress who blossomed into an international model. At the end of the previous season she hit London's ramps and studios with her agent, Hulbrand (Francois Coertze).

The second season starts with Katryn in London with Hulbrand. However, she wants to return to South Africa. After a dramatic incident she packs her bags and flees back, but won't make contact with anyone.

Jinx is searching frantically for his love who disappeared without trace. Meanwhile Hulbrand is blackening her name with stories about her unprofessional behaviour.

To top it all, when sentence is passed on the arch thug, Robert Gouws (Jacques Gombault), he utters a curse on Jinx and Katryn, which sends the media into a spin. Could there be any truth in the curse?

The series was produced and directed by Jan Scholtz. Original music was composed by Valiant Swart.
