It's been 10 years since Mmatema Moremi rose to fame on Season 11 of Idols and now she's back on primetime TV, as singer Basetsana Serite on Genesis.
She debuted on Friday 12 September as a character who has troubled obstacles she has to overcome: her insecurity and self doubt.
Basetsana's described as a songbird who can move mountains with her voice, but she doesn't believe this herself.
Her ambition clashes with her self doubt.
And her loyalty clashes with her desire for the spotlight when she has to decide on which record label she's going to sign with: Genesis or Redemption Records?
It's a case of life imitating art because Mmatema was in the same situation after her stint on Idols.
She was runner-up to Karabo Mogane and won a recording contract with Universal Music South Africa.
She later ditched them to pursue a career in gospel music through her own company Mmatema Moremi Media Productions (Pty) Ltd.
So what's the real story with Basetsana? Why is she so unconfident? Take a guess and then click the Spoiler! box for the answer:
Childhood trauma, obvs!
We got our TVSA clutches on her official character bible which reveals her backstory.
This is it:
Basetsana sang in the school choir but never got to be a popular lead singer because of her reserved personality.
Despite her talent, she was always overlooked in comparison to social butterflies and this has knocked her confidence.
Once she finished her tertiary education she worked for her family business in stress free jobs so she could avoid drama and competition.
She hasn’t healed from her childhood traumas and constantly needs affirmation.
She’s paranoid and can easily be discouraged or swayed.
Where to from here?
